UFC announced on Saturday that former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will be inducted into the 2024 Class of the UFC Hall of Fame as a Pioneer. The 2024 UFC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place as part of the 12th Annual UFC International Fight Week, on June 27, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “Shogun Rua is one of the greatest Brazilian athletes in combat sports history,” said UFC President & CEO Dana White . “Shogun had an incredible run in PRIDE and UFC, and he was fearless inside the Octagon. His fights against Mark Coleman , Chuck Liddell , Lyoto Machida , and Dan Henderson represent some of the most memorable moments in UFC history and helped put Brazilian MMA on the map. It will be an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer during International Fight Week.” Rua will enter the UFC Hall of Fame as the 20 th member of the Pioneer Era Wing

Joanna Jedrzejczyk headed to the UFC Hall of Fame

UFC announced on Saturday that former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame’s ‘Modern Wing’ as a member of the Class of 2024. Joanna will enter the Hall of Fame as the second female inductee in UFC history and first from the strawweight division. The 2024 UFC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place as part of the 12 th Annual UFC International Fight Week, on Thursday, June 27, at T-Mobile Arena. “Joanna is one of the greatest athletes in combat sports history,” UFC CEO Dana White said. “Joanna is an amazing person who has been an incredible champion, ambassador, and role model for women’s MMA, as well as an absolute killer inside the Octagon. She fought the best of the best in her division and never backed down from an opponent.

It has been called the most important fight in UFC history – and even the most important fight in the history of MMA by some. The short-term effect “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 1 light heavyweight final between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar had on the UFC in particular was it turned the promotion into a hot property – one that could quickly climb out of debt and stay in business. The long-term effect, of course, was that by doing that, the UFC has become one of the biggest sports properties in the world. UFC President Dana White is always quick to point out the importance of Griffin-Bonnar I and how it saved the company.

As it turns out, the talk took place this past week prior to White honoring the longtime UFC fighter with a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame , which drew criticism from critics and then a fiery reply from the executive. “We hugged it out, and he kept explaining to me why he did what he did, and I said, ‘It doesn’t f–king matter why you did it. You did it. You lied to me,’” White said. Bonnar (15-8 MMA, 8-7 UFC) retired after losing to now-former champ Anderson Silva at the pay-per-view event this past October

LAS VEGAS – Six weeks after Dana White first announced his intentions , the UFC president has now officially inducted retired light heavyweights Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar into the UFC Hall of Fame. White and longtime executive producer of “The Ultimate Fighter” Craig Piligian today made the pair’s enshrinement official at a ceremony that took place at the promotion’s UFC Fan Expo Las Vegas 2013 inside Sin City’s Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Griffin and Bonnar were the light-heavyweight finalists on Season 1 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” During the live finale, the two engaged in one of the most memorable slugfests in MMA history, with Griffin coming out ahead with a 29-28 unanimous-decision win. That fight is largely credited with fueling the UFC’s meteoric rise in popularity around the globe, and White has long praised both fighters for their contributions to the company.

Five days before he’s due to induct a man he’s still not speaking to into the UFC Hall of Fame, UFC President Dana White did his best to explain to the media why he thinks Stephan Bonnar is deserving of the honor. “The way I’m looking at it is, I’m inducting Forrest [Griffin], and Stephan goes with him,” White said. “Those two – it wasn’t just Forrest – both of those guys took us to this next level.” In other words, it’s because of that one fight, which we all pretty much already knew. What we don’t seem to appreciate, at least in White’s eyes, is what that one fight truly meant for the UFC, which came into the very first live finale for “The Ultimate Fighter” with an uncertain future, and left with a deal that would at least ensure that it could keep the lights on for a little while longer. You know this chapter of the origin story by now. The UFC, down to the last of the small fortune that the Fertitta family was willing to pump into it, bought its way onto Spike TV with an MMA reality show that White hoped would be the steppingstone to success.
