Women’s flyweight Tracy Cortez suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in her career last Saturday on the UFC 329: McGregor vs. Holloway 2 early preliminary card. She was defeated by rising Chinese star Wang Cong via unanimous decision.

After nearly three years away from the promotion, featherweight Jared Downing (9-2 MMA, 2-0 BFC) returns to the Bellator MMA cage to face Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (17-2 MMA, 5-2 BFC) at Bellator 97. Bellator officials recently announced the switch, which sees Downing step in for an injured Rob Emerson . Bellator 97 takes place July 31 at Albuquerque’s Santa Ana Center. The evening’s five-fight main card, which includes the new Downing vs. Freire bout, airs on Spike TV. The preliminary card streams on Spike.com. “It takes a ton of heart to accept a fight less than 20 days out, especially when you have to step in the cage with one of the most dangerous men in the world in ‘Pitbull,’” Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney stated. “Jared is a guy we’ve had our eye on for a while, and win or lose, he’ll make a great addition to our featherweight ranks.” Two of Downing’s first five professional fights took place in the Bellator cage, where “Demon Eyes” earned wins over Danny Tims and Chad Vandenberg

UFC 162 results/photos: Andrew Craig outpaces Chris Leben to take split decision

LAS VEGAS – The heart was there for Chris Leben, but sometimes that’s just not enough. That was the case on Saturday for Leben against Andrew Craig, who picked his strikes carefully, landed accurately and outstruck Leben on his way to a split-decision win. The middleweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FX ahead of a main card on pay-per-view. Leben tied Craig up early and started working punches to the body with Craig’s back against the cage. He then dropped to look for a single-leg takedown, but Craig stayed on his feet – and that pattern would repeat several times throughout the fight. Craig landed a knee to the body to finally get Leben to break. But Leben came back strong right away with a right hand, then went after the takedown again and got the fight to the floor momentarily.

White’s defense of Bonnar tells us everything we need to know about UFC HOF

Five days before he’s due to induct a man he’s still not speaking to into the UFC Hall of Fame, UFC President Dana White did his best to explain to the media why he thinks Stephan Bonnar is deserving of the honor. “The way I’m looking at it is, I’m inducting Forrest [Griffin], and Stephan goes with him,” White said. “Those two – it wasn’t just Forrest – both of those guys took us to this next level.” In other words, it’s because of that one fight, which we all pretty much already knew. What we don’t seem to appreciate, at least in White’s eyes, is what that one fight truly meant for the UFC, which came into the very first live finale for “The Ultimate Fighter” with an uncertain future, and left with a deal that would at least ensure that it could keep the lights on for a little while longer. You know this chapter of the origin story by now. The UFC, down to the last of the small fortune that the Fertitta family was willing to pump into it, bought its way onto Spike TV with an MMA reality show that White hoped would be the steppingstone to success. A gambler at heart, the UFC president bet everything on that first season

Dana White says he can solve UFC fighter pay gripes – by eliminating bonuses

LAS VEGAS – The UFC is contemplating the elimination of fight-night and discretionary bonuses to fighters, the promotion’s president told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “You don’t like the structure? All right, we’ll pay the lower-level guys more money – no more f–king bonuses,” Dana White said. “You guys come in, you negotiate your contracts, and we do away with all bonuses. That’s what I’m thinking about doing.” White today said he and UFC co-owner and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta came up with the idea to redistribute wealth after several former and current UFC fighters publicly criticized the way the promotion pays its fighters. And if they follow through with it, they could find out very quickly if those currently under contract believe the current system is as bad as its often made to be. White said that for every UFC event that “kicks ass,” the promotion “makes sure that everybody gets a piece of the extra.” Now, the promotion could boost fighters’ base salaries across the board and take away rewards for those that perform. “The bonuses are something we’ve been doing out of the kindness of our f–king heart,” White said. “It was something we liked to do. Apparently, people don’t like it.

UFC 162 extended preview: Is Chris Weidman the one to dethrone Anderson Silva?
