He can tell you, for instance, that he was so trusting of the Japanese health system that leaving a PRIDE fight banged up was not even that concerning. But there were also a few less-than-pleasant experiences with international healthcare that stand out for “The Texas Crazy Horse.” There’s one, specifically, that sounds straight out of a movie. And not the type of feel-good movie that Reese Witherspoon could play the lead. The year was 2000, and the city was a very different version of 2017’s Moscow.

Rizin FF 5 results: Tatsuya Kawajiri and Kyoji Horiguchi are event’s big victors

Anthony Birchak showed heart and composure, but he was still no match for a smothering Tatsuya Kawajiri at today’s “Rizin FF 5: Sakura” event. The featherweight fight headlined the show, which streamed live on FITE TV from Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. With the unanimous-decision win over fellow UFC vet Birchak (13-4), Kawajiri (36-11) bounces back from a submission loss to Kron Gracie in his promotional debut, which took place at Rizin FF Grand Prix 2016 this past year. Birchak, in turn, kicks off his Rizin FF career on a sour note after a recent 2-2 UFC stint. Birchak immediately proved no pushover, and he refused to stay on the mat after Kawajiri’s back-to-back takedown attempts.

Filed under: News , Radio Highlight Heath Herring likens the first round of his first MMA fight in eight years to the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. Thrust into a sudden explosion of violence, he was forced to adapt – quickly. Eight years had passed since Herring stepped into the ring against Amir Aliakbari, a world champion wrestler who’d missed out of the 2012 Olympics due to a doping violation. He’d had only two weeks to prepare for the Rizin open weight grand prix, a competition he’d rejected offers to join because, well, he hadn’t fought in eight years. To say Aliakbari gave him a rude awakening would be an understatement.

Rizin FF fills out April 16 card in Japan, including several UFC veterans

The card for Rizin FF’s next event has started to build, and it’s filled with former UFC fighters. The previously announced main event for the show, which takes place April 16 at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan, is between former UFC flyweight title challenger Kyoji Horiguchi (18-2) and Yuki Motoya (18-4). That fight, the promotion has announced, will take place at a 128-pound catch weight. Additionally, UFC vet Anthony Birchak (13-3) will move up a weight class to meet fellow UFC veteran and Japanese MMA legend Tatsuya Kawajiri (35-11-2) at featherweight. UFC vet Daron Cruickshank (18-9) will take on Japan’s Yusuke Yachi (16-6) at lightweight. UFC vet Heath Herring (28-15) returns at heavyweight to fight Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii (14-7-1).

The second round of the 16-man Rizin Open Weight Grand Prix 2016 ended in an upset. MMA legend Mirko Filipovic added another remarkable win to his lengthy resume when he stopped Muhammed Lawal by second-round TKO for arguably his most significant victory in several years. “Cro Cop” (33-11-2) managed to thwart several of Lawal’s (20-6) takedown attempts and picked up a head of steam in the striking department before an uppercut landed midway through the second round that dropped “King Mo” and led to the surprising stoppage in the headlining bout of the online-streamed event at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Although he won, Filipovic was forced to overcome some adversity when Lawal scored a big takedown less than 30 seconds into the fight. He spent more than half the round in top control before the referee decided to stand the fight up, and that’s when Filipovic started to unleash his patented kicks

Two notable names are late additions to the upcoming continuation of the Rizin FF open-weight world grand prix. Bellator veteran Muhammed Lawal (20-5) has stepped in as a replacement for recently scratched Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1) and will fight Mirko Filipovic (32-11-2). Additionally, former UFC and PRIDE fighter Heath Herring (28-14), who hasn’t fought since 2008, has replaced Shane Carwin (12-2) and will fight Amir Aliakbari (3-0) in another quarterfinal-round matchup at the upcoming Rizin FF 3 event. Rizin FF officials confirmed the matchups today when contacted by MMAjunkie
