Rampage Jackson Says There’s Always Been a Secret Rivalry with Tito Ortiz

Former UFC light heavyweight champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Tito Ortiz have been friends for over a decade. They’ve been training partners, and at one time, they said they would never fight each other. Times have changed. Their friendship is intact, but the two no longer train together and are going to fight. Ortiz and Jackson will headline Bellator MMA ’s first ever pay-per-view on Nov. 2, and Jackson says there’s always been a bit of a secret rivalry between the two. When Jackson was making his way up the ranks in Japan with the Pride organization, Ortiz was the reigning UFC 205-pound champion. The two began training together at Ortiz’ gym in California under the direction of Colin Oyama. “I trained with Tito for years and I can tell secretly there’s been a little competition between me and Tito. I remember when I first started training with him and Ricco Rodriguez, they used to kick my ass all the time and stuff like that.

With Bellator MMA’s first pay-per-view venture featuring a pair of headliners who never have fought for the promotion before, its champions apparently don’t need to worry about being left out in the cold. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney on Monday said the plan is for the promotion to stack much the rest of the main card of its first pay-per-view with title fights. Bellator 106 is set for Nov. 2 at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif., and will be headlined by former UFC light heavyweight champions Quinton Jackson (32-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Tito Ortiz (16-11-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA). Ortiz’s signing with the promotion just was announced this past week when he was introduced in the cage by “Rampage,” who was on hand at Bellator 97 to make the special announcement about the fight. Jackson fought most recently in the UFC and dropped a decision to Glover Teixeira , his third straight loss. Ortiz retired following his loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 148 in July 2012, also his third straight setback and seventh loss in nine fights. Rebney, as part of a media call in support of the company’s inaugural pay-per-view, said he isn’t worried about “Rampage” and Ortiz stealing the spotlight from longstanding Bellator champions like Pat Curran , Michael Chandler and Ben Askren , the latter two of which just defended their titles in dominant fashion at Bellator 97

The two and a half hour show starts at a special time of 3 p.m. ET (noon PT). The media call will feature Bellator 106 headliners Quinton Jackson and Tito Ortiz . “Rampage” and Ortiz each are former UFC light heavyweight champions who left that organization in the past year – Ortiz through retirement and Jackson to sign with Bellator. This past week, Jackson and Bellator made a surprise announcement that Ortiz had signed with the promotion to return from retirement to fight Jackson, a friend and sometimes training partner. The two will meet in the main event of Bellator’s first pay-per-view, and we’ll stream the call with the two fighters and CEO Bjorn Rebney. Bellator 97 took place Wednesday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., just outside of Albuquerque. It proved to be one of the biggest nights in the company’s history. Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler , and welterweight titleholder Ben Askren both successfully defended their belts, while Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal won the promotion’s abbreviated Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament final.
