Successful in His Light Heavyweight Debut, UFC Vet Paul Buentello Decided it was Now or Never

After 16 years and nearly 50 fights in MMA, former UFC heavyweight title contender Paul Buentello decided the time was now or never to make a change, so he moved down to 205 pounds for the first time in his career at the recent Legacy FC 22 show in Lubbock, Texas. The results were better than some may have anticipated. Buentello staved off a rear naked choke attempted throughout much of the first round of his bout with fellow former UFC fighter James McSweeney.

UFC 166 gets lightweight bout between K.J. Noons, George Sotiropoulos

A pair of lightweights looking to snap rough stretches have been added to the ever-growing UFC 166 lineup in October. Strikeforce veteran K.J. Noons (11-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will meet George Sotiropoulos (14-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) on the card in Texas, and each fighter will be hoping to snap a three-fight losing skid. UFC officials on Wednesday confirmed the bout, which was first reported by Australian news outlet The Age . UFC 166 takes place Oct. 19 at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card, featuring a heavyweight title bout between champion Cain Velasquez and former champ Junior dos Santos in a trilogy rematch, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.

Paul Buentello headlines Legacy FC 22 in Lubbock, Texas

Texas native Paul Buentello will try to make it four straight when he headlines Legacy FC 22 in front of his home crowd later this summer. Buentello (32-15) meets Marcus Sursa (12-8) in a light heavyweight bout to headline the Aug. 23 show in Lubbock, Texas. Legacy Fighting Championship officials recently announced the show, which will have a six-fight main card that airs live on AXS TV. Although Legacy FC has not yet announced a venue for the event, sources close to the promotion told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Fairgrounds Park Coliseum is being considered as host. Buentello, a former UFC and Strikeforce heavyweight title challenger, has won three straight with a pair of knockouts. The 39-year-old “Headhunter” is 5-5 in his past 10 bouts, which started with an 0-2 stretch in his return to the UFC with losses to Stefan Struve and Cheick Kongo .

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey tries to emulate her favorite fighter, Fedor Emelianenko , in her fights. “My favorite fighter to watch ever I would say is Fedor Emelianenko,” Rousey said during a Facebook chat sponsored by Metro PCS on Wednesday. Emelianenko held the Pride FC heavyweight title from 2003 to 2006. In an eight-year span, the Russian strung together an unprecedented 28-fight winning streak. He’s widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight of all time. “He’s always going to be my favorite. It was the first highlight reel I ever saw of MMA. I loved his style and how he came from a Judo-Sambo background, and I really try to emulate his style every time that I fight,” said Rousey. Emelianenko retired from fighting on June 12, 2012 following a first-round knockout win over former UFC heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo in St. Petersburg, Russia. Fedor Still Tops Accomplishments, but Fabricio Werdum Contemplates Path to UFC Title Shot

As great as it was for Fabricio Werdum to avenge a loss and topple his idol at UFC on Fuel TV 10 in Fortaleza, Brazil, on Saturday night, beating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira still didn’t rank as the highest accomplishment of his mixed martial arts career. That position is still reserved for Werdum’s victory over Fedor Emelianenko when the two fought under the Strikeforce banner. “It was definitely Fedor,” Werdum said at Saturday night’s press conference. He fought just one more time for Strikeforce following the win over Fedor . He lost a unanimous decision to Alistair Overeem in what proved to be lackluster efforts from both men. Werdum immediately rebounded when he moved to the UFC , reeling off victories over Roy Nelson and Mike Russow en route to his rematch with Nogueira. Now he is in the thick of UFC heavyweight title talk.
