ONE Championship 70 results: Bibiano Fernandes stops Martin Nguyen from history with 7th title defense

Bibiano Fernandes continued to be the most successful titleholder in ONE Championship history when he defended his belt yet again in today’s ONE Championship 70 headliner. Fernandes (22-3) recorded his seventh consecutive bantamweight title defense when he walked away with a split decision against featherweight and lightweight champ Martin Nguyen (10-2) in the headlining bout at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. Nguyen came into the fight looking to make MMA history as the first simultaneous three-division champion in a major organization. Fernandes had other plans, though, and extended his winning streak to 14 fights dating back to December 2010.

Today’s ONE Championship 61 main event went the distance, but the flyweight bout was spoiled in the first round by an apparent referee blunder. Facing Kairat Akhmetov (21-1), Geje Eustaquio (9-6) unloaded a flush upkick – totally legal under ONE Championship’s rules – but referee Yuji Shimada inexplicably called a timeout. Instead of awarding the knockout stoppage, the ref continued to fight, and Akhmetov rallied to pick up a narrow split-decision win. ONE Championship 47 heads to Malaysia with Rob Lisita vs. Ev Ting on Sept. 2

Rob Lisita ONE Championship’s busy schedule will continue next month with a return to Malaysia. “ONE Championship 47: Unbreakable Warriors” is set for Sept. 2 at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event will stream via online pay-per-view. The card will be headlined by Malaysia’s own Ev Ting (11-3), who lives and trains in New Zealand, in a featherweight bout against Australia’s Rob Lisita (14-8). “There is always a tremendous atmosphere and excitement in Kuala Lumpur each time ONE Championship comes to visit,” ONE Championship CEO Victor Cui stated.
