“XFC 26: Night of Champions III” is set for Oct. 18 at Tennessee’s Nashville Municipal Auditorium, and a pair of title fights will be contested on the card. Xtreme Fighting Championships officials recently announced that lightweight champ Scott Holtzman (5-0) will defend his belt against Roger Carroll (11-9), while female contenders Cortney Casey (1-0) and Pearl Gonzales (1-1) will compete for the promotion’s inaugural women’s flyweight title. The evening’s main card airs on AXS TV.

Scott Holtzman seized the night at XFC 24 on Friday night at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., capturing the vacant XFC lightweight title. Holtzman had initially planned on facing XFC champion Nick Newell for the belt on Friday night, but that was before Newell declined the fight, was stripped of his title, and eventually exited the promotion, signing with the World Series of Fighting. With Newell out of the picture, the XFC matched Holtzman up with John Mahlow for the vacant title, and Holtzman took full advantage of the moment. Mahlow scored an early takedown, but as the fight wore on, Holtzman ramped up his takedown defense and a blistering offensive attack. He cut Mahlow with a spinning elbow, then took him down and ground and pounded in the opening round. Holtzman kept the attack going in round two, grounding Mahlow again. When MMAWeekly.com last spoke to Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman , he had just found out that his originally scheduled XFC 24 opponent, lightweight champion Nick Newell , decided to not defend his title. Newell was then stripped of his title and would eventually leave the XFC for the World Series of Fighting, leading to John Mahlow stepping in to face Holtzman for the vacant championship. And while he was able to brush off the initial awkwardness of the situation, Holtzman says in the weeks leading up to the fight, he’s had to go through it all over again. “I moved past the craziness there pretty quickly,” said Holtzman. “It was kind of wild for a day or two, but things settled down. “This week there’s been a flood of interviews and everybody wants to bring it up and talk about it again

After a Little Maintenance, Eric Reynolds Sees XFC 24 as Opportunity to Get Back in the Title Hunt

It’s been nearly seven months since Floridian Eric “It’s A Wrap” Reynolds lost to Nick Newell for the XFC lightweight championship. And even though he’s had opportunities to return from that loss before now, Reynolds has purposefully taken time off to work on the mistakes he made in his fight to Newell, so that it doesn’t ever happen again. “I’ve been working on my ground a lot because that was my third rear naked choke loss, and I don’t want there to be a fourth,” said Reynolds. “I’ve been working on moving forward and pushing the action. I feel like I’d been holding back my last couple fights, so I plan on not relying so much on the point system, but more so just looking at finishing (my opponents) and hurting them. “He was a good opponent and it was a good lesson for me. I learned I had to train harder and work harder on any aspect because anything can happen at any time in there, so I’ve got to prepared.” Reynolds is due to return to the XFC this Friday night on the same card that the title he lost will be decided, but not with Newell involved. In the past month, Newell decided he would not face mandatory challenger Scott Holtzman, and thus was stripped of his title and has since signed with the World Series of Fighting

XFC lightweight Scott Holtzman is a fan of fighters who do their talking in the ring – guys like Benson Henderson and Georges St-Pierre (though he has mixed feelings about the latter’s style). But Nick Newell , he told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio), falls into the category of the guys who talk outside the cage – guys like Nick Diaz . “I would see him at weigh-ins, and I just didn’t like how he carried himself,” Holtzman said of Newell, a would-be opponent before the reigning lightweight champion left the XFC for the World Series of Fighting. “It was a fight I wanted for a few reasons. I thought he was a bit cocky and arrogant. I didn’t like how he walked around mean-mugging everybody. “But that’s just a personal thing. Obviously, he’s got a lot of fans out there, and I don’t have anything too negative to say about him as a fighter.
