Machado Garry expects Muhammad to retain the title but either way he isn’t going to accept a fight that isn’t for the championship next. “The truth is, both of the fighters are phenomenal fighters. Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry got back in the win column on Saturday, defeating Carlos Prates in the UFC Kansas City main event via unanimous decision. The 27-year old Machado Garry entered the featured fight coming off the first loss of his career. He dropped a decision to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 in December but rebounded on Saturday. “I told everyone what I was going to do. I was going to outclass him and I believe I did that,” Machado Garry said following the win over Prates. With the win, Machado Garry revealed that he’s the ‘official backup’ for the UFC 315 welterweight title fight between champion Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena . “My entire goal in this game is to prove that I’m one of the most game fighters that’s ever existed,” he said. “I’ve got the fighting Irish in my blood, in my soul. It’s part of my history.

The Irishman has received a mixed reception from fans since debuting in the UFC back in 2021. ‘The Future’ is now approaching his 10th fight inside the octagon, and while some believe he isn’t cut out to be a mainstay atop the welterweight division rankings, his 9-1 record says otherwise. Some of his peers aren’t sold by what they’ve seen from Ian Machado Garry thus far in his career, one of those men being division rival Colby Covington.

Leon Edwards lost the welterweight title at UFC 304 last July, coming up short to Belal Muhammad by unanimous decision. He returned in March against Sean Brady and was defeated by guillotine choke in the fourth round. Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry wasn’t surprised that Edwards lost to Brady in the UFC London main event. He believes when “Rocky” experiences adversity in a fight he ‘quits’ because ‘he’s not a fighter at heart.’ “We’ve seen in the Kamaru [Usman] fight, we’ve seen in the Belal fight, and we seen in the Sean Brady fight, when the going gets tough Leon doesn’t like to be there,” Machado Garry said on the Ariel Helwani Show . “I believe that Belal Muhammad put out the blueprint for everyone to go out and beat Leon Edwards. Put him on the back foot, take him down, smash him, control him and he’ll quit. He doesn’t want to be there.

Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry (15-1) suffered the first loss of his career to Shavkat Rakhmonov (19-0) in his last outing at UFC 310 in December. The match between the two was billed as a title eliminator bout. When an injury kept Rakhmonov from facing champion Belal Muhammad , the fight promotion opted to pit the champion against No. 5 ranked Jack Della Maddalena (17-2). Garry thought he should have gotten the call to fight for the title despite coming off a loss and has been vocal about it. “I think the word ‘withdrew’ is kind of the word that bugs me on that because I don’t believe Shavkat withdrew due to the choice of not wanting to fight for a title. From what I’m hearing is more an injury, an injury that I absolutely believe he sustained in the fight with me due to the amount of heel kicks I put to his knee,” Machado Garry said on the Ariel Helwani Show .

Muhammad (24-3) was scheduled to put his title on the line for the first time against the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov (19-0) but a knee injury prevented Rakhmonov from competing. Matchmakers opted to pit Muhammad against Della Maddalena (17-2) instead.
