Tecia Torres: A belt will be around my waist in 2014

Recently, strawweight Tecia Torres sat down for a serious chat with her biggest fan: her mom. Torres said she would give MMA another year, and if something big didn’t happen, she would put the sport aside to use her college degree. Now, she won’t have to make that choice. “I’m just waiting for that knock on the door,” Torres (4-0) recently told MMAjunkie Radio. That knock on Wednesday came from the UFC, which signed a big group of stawweights from Invicta Fighting Championship, the all-female promotion that gave fighters like Torres a platform to blossom as a professional. In her previous bout at Invicta FC 6, Torres outpointed the highly regarded up-and-comer Rose Namajunas.

As expected, Leslie Smith (6-4-1) proved a worthy challenger, but Barb Honchak (9-2) proved an equally upstanding champion, retaining her Invicta FC flyweight title belt in a 25-minute slugfest. The contest served as the main event of Saturday’s Invicta FC 8 event, which took place at Missouri’s Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City and aired on pay-per-view. After some back-and-forth action to open the bout, Honchak scored a takedown late in the frame and transitioned quickly to the back, where she looked to sneak in a rear-naked choke. However, Smith was active in defense and rolled to keep her neck free.

When the UFC first announced that it would add 135-pound women to its previously all-male roster of fighters, Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp[autotag] liked to say that it didn’t concern her all that much because, “they’re doing one weight class; I’ve got five.” But now, according to UFC president Dana White, the world’s foremost MMA organization will soon expand to two women’s divisions, adding the 115-pound class some time in the near future. It’s enough to make you wonder, where will that leave Invicta, which gears up for its seventh event in Kansas City, Mo. this Saturday night (Dec. 7, 9 pm ET, pay-per-view)? If the UFC adds more women to the roster, especially in what Knapp regards as “probably the deepest division in all of women’s MMA,” what will that mean for the organization that was built on the belief that people really do want to see women fight, even if the UFC didn’t agree until [autotag]Ronda Rousey came along
