With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMAjunkie takes a look at the best fights from September. Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and the winner of MMAjunkie’s “Fight of the Month” award. At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting on your choice for “Fight of the Month.” * * * * The Nominees Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Chiesa at UFC Fight Night 50 Joe Lauzon (24-9) and Michael Chiesa (11-2) went back and forth in a raucous lightweight fight. However, the contest unfortunately ended a bit early when a cut above Chiesa’s eye forced the cageside doctor to stop the bout in the second round. After a competitive start, the turning point came when Lauzon landed an elbow that sliced open Chiesa and led to the end.

It was true when the sport first started to flourish, and it’s equally true now: Being an MMA fighter can be a tough way to make a living. On Saturday “The Ultimate Fighter 18″ veteran Peggy Morgan fought at Invicta FC 8. Despite a noble effort in her UFC Fight Pass-streamed bout, Morgan (2-2) proved no match for Mexican bantamweight prospect Irene Aldana (4-1). She survived one flurry, but when Aldana followed with another, Morgan crashed to the mat and ultimately tapped out from a first-round rear-naked choke . Following the fight, Morgan posted a photo (via Twitter ): Rough night.

Michelle Waterson (12-3) vowed to become the first to stop Yasuko Tamada (15-9-3), and in her first Invicta FC atomweight title defense, she lived up to the promise with a third-round TKO win . Tamada previously went 26 fights without a stoppage loss, but “The Karate Hottie” put an end to the streak with a dominant showing in Saturday’s Invicta FC 8 main event at Kansas City, Mo.’s Municipal Auditorium. The fight headlined the organization’s debut on UFC Fight Pass, but unfortunately, some streaming issues cast a shadow over Waterson’s one-sided performance. In a time where one can easily argue the biggest star in MMA is UFC women’s champ Ronda Rousey, the ladies’ divisions are increasingly in high demand. But did Invicta FC hurt its long-term chances by waiting nine months between shows? Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp certainly doesn’t think so. “It hasn’t hurt us like people might think,” Knapp told MMAjunkie Radio.

Even at 135, Invicta FC 8′s Ediane Gomes not sure she has a UFC future

Longtime featherweight Ediane Gomes successfully made 135 pounds for tonight’s Invicta FC 8, but she’s still not sure she’ll ever have a home in the UFC. Gomes (10-2), who meets vet Tonya Evinger (13-5) tonight at Invicta FC 8 in Kansas City, Mo., dropped a weight class partially in hopes of securing a long-rumored bout with former Strikeforce champion and reigning Invicta featherweight titleholder Cristiane Justino , (12-1) who’s making a similar drop. While “Cyborg” focuses on her move to bantamweight and a potential future matchup with UFC champ Ronda Rousey, Gomes was forced to settle with a lower-profile bout against Evinger. It’s still a touch matchup (Evinger, an eight-year pro, has won four straight fights), and it should be seen by a wider audience now that Invicta FC events stream on UFC Fight Pass. Admittedly, though, Gomes wanted a shot at Justino’s belt. “I actually like her,” she told MMAjunkie.
