When Amanda Cooper received the impending news the UFC would not be renewing her contract, she wasn’t devastated. Instead she was relaxed and at peace with the parting of ways. The 27-year-old had been with the promotion since 2016. As UFC embraces women’s MMA, Invicta’s Knapp sees ‘validation’ instead of threats

When the UFC first announced that it would add 135-pound women to its previously all-male roster of fighters, Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp[autotag] liked to say that it didn’t concern her all that much because, “they’re doing one weight class; I’ve got five.” But now, according to UFC president Dana White, the world’s foremost MMA organization will soon expand to two women’s divisions, adding the 115-pound class some time in the near future. It’s enough to make you wonder, where will that leave Invicta, which gears up for its seventh event in Kansas City, Mo. this Saturday night (Dec. 7, 9 pm ET, pay-per-view)? If the UFC adds more women to the roster, especially in what Knapp regards as “probably the deepest division in all of women’s MMA,” what will that mean for the organization that was built on the belief that people really do want to see women fight, even if the UFC didn’t agree until [autotag]Ronda Rousey came along

Former Invicta FC atomweight champion Jessica Penne wants a rematch with Michelle Waterson , but Invicta FC has other plans. “I think I’m ready for a rematch,” said Penne following her Invicta FC 6 submission win over Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc on Saturday. Penne became the first ever champion in Invicta FC history when she defeated Naho Sugiyama at Invicta FC 3 in October 2012. Waterson defeated Penne in her first title defense by arm bar to capture the Invicta FC atomweight title at Invicta FC 5 on April 5. Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp believes Penne is deserving of another title shot, but will not make the rematch out of respect for Waterson as a champion. “I always look at it this way. I feel like when someone becomes champion that respectfully you should give them a fight before they face that opponent again. That’s just my thoughts on it,” said Knapp during the Invicta FC 6 post-fight press conference.

Ranking Criteria The rankings take into account a fighter’s wins/losses, quality of competition, finishing rate/dominance and frequency of fights. Fighters are no longer eligible to be ranked after they’ve been inactive for 24 months, either due to injuries, drug/conduct suspensions, contract disputes or self-imposed hiatuses. Fighters serving drug/conduct suspensions are eligible to be ranked, so long as they’re not inactive for more than 24 months. To the best of our ability, fighters will be ranked in their primary weight class. Catchweight fights and bouts outside the fighter’s primary weight class can have a positive or negative impact on the ranking. However, fighters can be ranked in only one weight class at a given time, and in most cases, they won’t be ranked in a new weight class until they’ve had their first fight at that weight. With women taking center stage at this past weekend’s Invicta FC 6 event, there were no changes in this week’s USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com MMA Rankings. but a few key matchups lurk on the horizon, and major shifts could lie ahead
