LAS VEGAS – Johny Hendricks has a very simple plan for upsetting Georges St-Pierre and earning the UFC’s welterweight title. The challenger plans on walking through the champ’s vaunted jab before launching a counterattack he thinks will put “GSP” to sleep. “I don’t want to take ‘GSP’ down,” Hendricks said at Monday’s UFC World Tour 2013 stop in Las Vegas. “I want to lay him out. That’s all I want to do. UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald spent much of the past few weeks insisting he would not and could not fight friend and teammate Georges St-Pierre . Not even for the UFC welterweight title St-Pierre has held for the last five years. Before MacDonald’s lackluster unanimous decision win against Jake Ellenberger (29-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) at UFC on FOX 8 in Seattle, UFC President Dana White said he didn’t believe it. After the plodding performance by MacDonald (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC), who used a jab and a front kick and little else to win the fight on all three judges’ scorecards, it seemed like persuading MacDonald to accept a UFC title shot was the least of White’s concerns. “I don’t think he moves down the ladder,” White said of MacDonald after the event. “But do you think anybody’s screaming to see him fight again?” White had a point. UFC on Fox 8 Results: Rory MacDonald Outjabs Jake Ellenberger for Unanimous Decision Win

Rory MacDonald moved one step closer to a title shot after claiming an unanimous decision over Jake Ellenberger in the co-main event at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle on Saturday night. The judges scored the bout, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 all in favour of the Canadian. With so much on the line for both guys, Ellenberger was largely ineffective as the fight failed to live up to the hype. It was a measured start by both fighters with MacDonald working behind his jab, utilizing his reach advantage and controlling the distance of the fight. Ellenberger was looking to explode with his shots, while MacDonald continued to fire his jab, stinging Ellenberger. Ellenberger was unable to get on the inside with his striking and resorted to looking for the takedown, but MacDonald was equal to the task, shutting down the moves, effectively neutralizing Ellenberger’s attack with his footwork and jab. Ellenberger tried to pick up the pace in the final round, needing a finish, but much like the previous two rounds, he was largely ineffective, only able to land glancing shots when he got inside MacDonald’s reach. Inside the final minute, Ellenberger landed a takedown, putting MacDonald on his back, but it was too little too late as MacDonald moved one step closer to a title shot

UFC on Fox 8 Results: Robbie Lawler’s Octagon Return Continues with Another Stunning Knockout

Heading into his UFC on Fox 8 welterweight bout with Bobby Voelker, UFC veteran and perennial fan favorite Robbie Lawler had 20 career victories. Of those 20 victories, 17 came by way of knockout. After Saturday night, you can make that 21, as Lawler dispatched Voelker, leveling the Kansas City native with a thudding head-kick knockout at the start of the second round. Round one saw both fighters open with a purpose. Lawler stalked his opponent with a cocked right hand, as the 34-year-old Voelker looked to earn his first victory inside the Octagon after failing in his debut against Patrick Cote at UFC 158. As Lawler pressured with a stiff jab, Voelker attempted to stymie the oncoming pressure of the former Miletich Fighting System product by using an array of leg kicks and lateral movement.

They were teammates on Rashad Evans ‘ squad on “The Ultimate Fighter 10,” but Brendan Schaub (9-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) and Matt Mitrione (6-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) are now acting a lot more like what they’re going to be next month: opponents. The two recently got in a round of sparring on Twitter, with Mitrione making fun of Schaub’s recent appearances in grappling and MMA, and Schaub bringing Mitrione’s wife into the mix. “@BrendanSchaub looks like Adam Sandler f—ed Corky from ‘Life Goes On,’ Mitrione wrote. “I might look like adam Sandler/corkey mix your wife when we did appearances together sure seemed to like it,” Schaub fired back . “How’s that going by the way?” The heavyweights will answer for their words next month on the FX-televised preliminary card of UFC on FOX 8, which takes place July 27 at KeyArena in Seattle. WINNIPEG – After three rounds vying with James Krause’s sizable reach advantage, Sam Stout nabbed a takedown, likely hoping to curry favor with judges. Instead, he found himself trapped in a guillotine choke that allowed short-notice replacement Krause to secure his first-ever octagon win. The lightweight bout was part of today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a pay-per-view main card. London, Ontario, native Stout cursed himself as the two separated and the final bell rang. With several Canadians coming out ahead on scorecards, he might have taken home a close win. Krause peppered him throughout the fight with a stiff jab and brought out a variety of well-timed kicks that found their target. Late in the first, a sneaky high kick slammed into Stout’s head and splattered the two of them in blood as they worked on the mat.

UFC 161′s Roy Nelson says Daniel Cormier turned down fight offer

Heavyweight Roy Nelson is never one to shy away from stirring the pot, and today during a conference call in support of next week’s UFC 161 event, he did that a few times. Nelson (19-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC), a frequent antagonist of UFC President Dana White, fights Stipe Miocic (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at the June 15 event. Today he took a shot at his UFC stablemates as he talked about the portly, shaggy appearance that his UFC boss counts as one of several gripes with the fighter. “I don’t know if it works in my favor,” Nelson said. “It’s just people that tend to be in our sport tend to abuse performance-enhancing drugs, so that’s the reason why I probably don’t look like the typical UFC fighter. Later asked to explain why he is fighting Miocic instead of potential opponent Daniel Cormier (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at next week’s pay-per-view event, Nelson threw another sideways jab and hinted that Cormier turned down a proposed bout.
