UFC 163 Results: Phil Davis Steals a Decision From Lyoto Machida on the Brazilian’s Home Turf

Normally when a fighter competes in his hometown, there is a term commonly referred to in the fight game as “the hometown advantage.” Well, someone forgot to tell UFC light heavyweight and Belem, Brazil, native Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida about this saying before his UFC 163 bout with Phil Davis on Saturday night. And if they did tell him, rest assured, Machida would tell you that old fighting adage is for the birds. In front of his hometown faithful, inside a packed HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Machida dominated the former two-time National Champion from Penn State from pillar to post for the majority of the fight, only to suffer a perplexing unanimous decision loss as the scorecards were read. Round one was all Machida as he peppered Davis with counter jabs and body kicks from the outset. Davis circled to the left, showing some improved striking, but nothing to write home about. Midway through the first frame, Machida scored a slick straight left that drilled Davis on the chin and had him retreating. Machida followed up with a thudding flying knee to the body, as Davis recouped to the center of the Octagon. It took the former All-American almost four minutes into the round to attempt his first takedown, but when he did it was successful. As the first round came to a close, Davis was in Machida’s half-guard scoring powerful ground and pound. Round two was more of the same from Machida, as Davis opened with flashy front kicks and uncharacteristic combination punching. It looked good, but the attempts were more or less futile. Davis shot on Machida and the Brazilian sprawled with precision. The Dragon spent the majority of the round peppering his opponent with well-timed counter punching and textbook defense – something that has become a trademark of the former UFC light heavyweight champion

SEATTLE – It was the fight that got the most hype on Saturday’s card, but “Fight of the Night” it was not. Still, Rory MacDonald jabbed his way past a careful Jake Ellenberger and may have punched his ticket to a welterweight title fight. The welterweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. MacDonald kicked and jabbed early while Ellenberger sat back a while and seemed to look for his opening. Ellenberger had a couple moments in the first half of the round where he tried to get inside, but he wasn’t able to land anything of significance.

SEATTLE — Welterweight opponents Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald say they’ve had fun taking jabs at each other in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event. For the fans, a round of Twitter sparring, which went to the witty Ellenberger, has provided some sizzle to an otherwise bland promotional buildup. But now, as a potential title shot hangs in the balance for the winner of the co-headliner at Seattle’s KeyArena (FOX, 8 p.m. ET), the two standouts agree it’s all about business. “I’m pretty confident that this will be a No. 1 contender fight, and verbally, I’ve been told that, too,” Ellenberger (29-6 MMA, 8-2 UFC), 28, told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I’m not looking past this fight.” Neither is the grim-faced MacDonald (14-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC), though his path could lead to a move up to middleweight if he keeps his word not to challenge his friend and training partner, Georges St-Pierre , who’s scheduled to defend his welterweight title this fall against Johny Hendricks . Although MacDonald’s career frequently draws parallels with the champion, he shrugs off comparisons and is noncommittal about his next step.

For the better part of the last decade, no two names in MMA have come to define heavyweight ground wizardry more than Brazilian’s Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira . The two first met in the Pride 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix Quarterfinals in Saitama, Japan. That night, “Big Nog” earned a unanimous decision victory over the still-green Werdum. On Saturday night in Fortaleza, Brazil, the capacity crowd at Ginásio Paulo Sarasate were witness to one of the most anticipated rematches in heavyweight history, as Nogueira vs. Werdum 2 headlined the night’s UFC on Fuel TV 10 fight card. Round one opened with “Vai Cavalo” throwing pace-setting leg kicks to Nogueira’s lead leg. Almost immediately, Werdum looked to clinch with the pressuring Nogueira. Securing a takedown seconds into the opening frame, the two were immediately off to a ground battle. As Werdum had full mount, Nogueira scrambled, eventually regaining half guard. Werdum worked various ground and pound, but Nogueira secured a leg and a mad dash to the feet ensued. On Saturday night in Fortaleza, Brazil, after six months of inactivity due to an aforementioned suspension, Silva defeated former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante via first round knockout, effectively rejuvenating his career. Round one saw the Sao Paulo natives meet in the Octagon without touching gloves. Silva had his usual stone-faced look of determination, as UFC newcomer Feijao stood with a postured look of calm confidence.
