Varner (21-11-1 MMA, 3-6 UFC), a former WEC lightweight champion, ended his career on a bit of a sour note after nearly knocking himself out during a throw and eventually tapping out to rear-naked choke from Drew Dober (15-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC). After the preliminary-card bout, which aired on FOX Sports 1 from Phoenix’s U.S. Airways Center in Varner’s home state of Arizona, the 30-year-old announced his retirement

(This story first ran at AZCentral.com .) Phoenix native and former WEC champion Jamie Varner will meet Nebraska’s Drew Dober in a lightweight bout at December’s UFC on FOX 13 event in Phoenix. USA TODAY Sports today confirmed with UFC officials that Varner (21-10-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC) and Dober (14-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) have verbally agreed to the contest, and bout agreements are expected to be distributed shortly. UFC on FOX 13 takes place Dec. 13 at U.S. Airways Center, and the featured bouts air on FOX. A headlining matchup for the card, as well as ticketing information for the event, are expected to be announced shortly

The latest came from this past weekend’s UFC 173 event, where an ankle injury doomed Jamie Varner . In his latest video blog, which was released ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader with UFC Fight Night 41 in Berlin and the TUF Brazil 3 Finale in Sao Paulo, UFC President Dana White talks up this weekend’s dual-event day and also takes us behind the scenes of UFC 173, which took place May 24 in Las Vegas. The behind-the-scenes footage has your typical fight-night theatrics, including the immediate reaction to T.J. Dillashaw’s championship upset of the long-dominant Renan Barao. However, some of the best footage comes from the event’s first pay-per-view main-card bout.

Dana White on Jamie Varner’s corner: ‘I would’ve thrown in the towel’

UFC President Dana White admits that it was tough and uncomfortable to watch Saturday’s UFC 173 pay-per-view opener between lightweights James Krause and Jamie Varner . With Varner clearly injured early in the fight – MMAjunkie later learned he broke two bones in his foot and tore ligaments – some hard-to-watch moments followed. Cageside fans gasped as Varner threw haymakers while his foot continually collapsed underneath him. White admitted it was tough to witness, but a gutsy and remarkably resilient Varner never surrendered in that opening round. “Usually guys quit,” White said after the event at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena (check out his full post-UFC 173 media scrum below).

UFC lightweight Jamie Varner broke two bones in his foot and tore ligaments during a TKO loss to James Krause on the pay-per-view main card of Saturday’s UFC 173. Varner’s longtime rep, Oren Hodak, of KO Reps, confirmed the injury on Saturday via Twitter but did not specify which bones the fighter broke.
