Nick Newell returned from a two-and-a-half-year layoff, continued his submission ways, and called for a shot in the UFC. Newell (14-1) posted a first-round submission victory over vet Sonny Luque (10-7) in a 163-pound catchweight fight.

The lineup is set for March’s LFA 35 event, which features some familiar names. LFA 35 takes place March 9 at Arena Theatre in Houston, and the main card air on AXS TV. In the main event, Sabina Mazo (4-0), who scored highlight-reel head-kick knockout wins in her past two bouts, takes on Silvana Gomez Juarez (6-1) for the inaugural LFA women’s flyweight title. Mazo, a 20-year-old Colombian fighter now based in California, stopped Jamie Thorton and Linsey Williams with first-round head-kick knockouts in 2017 LFA fights. The show took place at Arena Theatre in the home city of the World Series champion Houston Astros, and the main card aired on AXS TV. In the main event, Jeff Hughes (8-1) dethroned heavyweight champion Richard Odoms (13-4) with a unanimous decision via 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 scores.

Legacy FC 59 took place at Arena Theatre in Houston and aired on AXS TV. In the headliner, Trevin Giles (8-0), who called for a shot in the UFC after emerging victorious, earned a submission win over Issac Villanueva (11-8). The fight-ending tap came after an enthralling second round. Elsewhere on the card, Justin Reiswerg (10-6) used a slick submission to tap lightweight Jason Langellier (4-1).
