Curran (36-18-1), a big-show vet who’s fought for organizations ranging from the UFC and the WEC to Strikeforce and PRIDE, suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Raufeon Stots in Wednesday’s Victory FC 53 headliner (watch the highlights below). It was Curran’s first fight since March 2015 (he retired after that one ) and just his second since one in August 2013 ( he retired after that one too ).

Tonight’s Victory FC 53 lineup got a major change to the main card, but will plow forward with six fights. Middleweight champion Mike Rhodes (10-4) was set to defend his title for the first time against UFC veteran Ron Stallings (14-8) in the main event. But Rhodes had to withdraw from the fight due to illness, the promotion announced, making the new headliner a bantamweight bout between Jeff Curran (36-17-1), a veteran of the UFC, Bellator, Strikeforce, WEC and PRIDE, and Raufeon Stots (6-0). Mike Rhodes Victory FC 53 takes place tonight at Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa. The main card streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Victory Fighting Championship is gearing up to go hot and heavy to close out the 2016 calendar year this fall and early winter. The promotion today announced a hashtagged “3 Shows, 30 Days” campaign with fight cards in Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas in November and December. The three events will combine to feature six title fights. Victory FC 53 will take place the day before Thanksgiving on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa

They attacked him unannounced, at all hours of the day, until he found himself hiding in his office at his gym in Crystal Lake, Ill., squeezing his head in his hands as he popped Advil to quiet down the pain. This, Jeff Curran knew, was probably a bad sign. This was a troubling development for a 37-year-old man who’d spent the past 17 years of his life getting hit in the head. He kept it to himself at first, because that was how he’d learned to handle the various aches and ailments that came with being a professional fighter.
