UFC Heavyweight Stefan Struve Diagnosed with Leaking Aortic Valve and Englarged Heart

The UFC’s return to Boston in August will go on as scheduled, and the “positive outcome” the promotion was hoping for apparently has been found. The Boston Herald on Sunday reported the Aug. 17 UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 card set for the city can go on as planned. As reported earlier this month, a Massachsetts law preventing foreign-born fighters without U.S. Social Security numbers from competing was putting the show in jeopardy . But UFC President Dana White told the Herald the issue has been resolved.

McCarthy on Mazzagatti criticism: ‘Safety of [Fitch] wasn’t in jeopardy’

Following Josh Burkman ‘s submission victory over Jon Fitch earlier this month in World Series of Fighting 3′s headliner, referee Steve Mazzagatti came under fire for an apparent late stoppage. One fellow ref, though, has come to his defense. Veteran official “Big” John McCarthy, who’s been policing the cage for two decades, doesn’t agree with the recent scathing criticism from Dana White . Following UFC 161, the UFC president, who’s long spoken out against Mazzagatti, said the ref is “dangerous” and “will seriously hurt somebody.” McCarthy, though, said the nature of the stoppage – Burkman actually broke the guillotine choke and showed Fitch was unconscious, before Mazzagatti noticed – wasn’t as serious as some have made it out to be. While McCarthy said Mazzagatti should have shifted to the other side of the fighters to get a better look at Fitch while he was in the choke, he said little damage was done in the June 14 fight

T.J. Grant had no idea yet that there was even a remote possibility his lightweight title fight might be in jeopardy. He found out from a fan while taking questions from fans at a Q&A session prior to the weigh-ins for UFC 161 nearly two weeks ago in Winnipeg that Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had pulled out of his featherweight title fight against Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) with an injury. It wasn’t until later that he found out that Pettis was suggesting he could take the place of Grant (21-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) at UFC 164 in August against Benson Henderson (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC). That never came to fruition – but it still set Grant off a little bit, telling ESPN U.K. that Pettis lobbying to move past Grant into the title fight on his hometown card was “low class” and “dirty.” UFC 164 takes place Aug

Dana White Blasts Steve Mazzagatti, but Pioneering Ref John McCarthy Says Fitch Wasn’t in Jeopardy

There has been quite a bit of talk about referee Steve Mazzagatti’s performance during the Josh Burkman and Jon Fitch main event bout at World Series of Fighting 3 on June 15 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The fight was brief, but it was the finish that led to a firestorm of discussion that includes the likes of UFC president Dana White , who often takes Mazzagatti’s refereeing skills to task, and John McCarthy, who is one of the pioneering referees in the sport of mixed martial arts. Burkman rocked Fitch early with punches, but quickly found a guillotine choke opportunity there for the taking. He took it.

If there is concern over the UFC being able to move forward with its Boston card with the same lineup that has been advertised, fans can perhaps breathe a little easier. The UFC today went ahead as planned with ticket sales for UFC on FOX Sports 1 1, which is slated for Aug. 17 at TD Garden in Boston. The promotion issued a press release for ticket sales, which start on Thursday for the general public, but went on sale to UFC Fight Club members earlier today. As reported earlier today, a story surfaced in the Boston Herald that said some fights on the show could be in jeopardy due to a Massachsetts law that keeps fighters born outside the country from competing without a U.S. Social Security number

Despite a report to the contrary, the UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen fight card is not in jeopardy. The fight card is slated of Aug. 17 in Boston, and is also supposed to serve as part of the launch-day programming for the new Fox Sports One nationwide sports network. The Boston Herald , however, reported on Tuesday that there are concerns over the participation of foreign-born fighters, such as main eventer Mauricio “Shogun” Rua .
