The first notable feat of Wilson Reis’ pro MMA career came five years ago and 14 bouts ago. As the short-lived EliteXC promotion was moving closer to extinction, Reis won the organization’s first (and only) 140-pound title. But even back then, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had his eye on the world’s largest fight promotion.

Dave Herman has tried to get under the skin of the world’s best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in the past. And to be quite frank, it didn’t work. For Herman’s fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira this past October, he made it a point to tell the world jiu-jitsu wouldn’t work on him. Then he went out and got submitted by “Big Nog” at UFC 153. On Saturday, Herman (21-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) fights Gabriel Gonzaga (14-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) at UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. And while he hasn’t made the same drastic proclamations this time around, it doesn’t seem like it would matter. Not to Gonzaga, anyway

Leave it to Brazil to set a record for submissions. It’s completely appropriate. Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 card set a new UFC record with eight submissions in 12 fights – and tied a promotional record with 10 total stoppages. The show took place in, of course, the cradle of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. UFC on FUEL TV 10 took place at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. The main card aired on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook. Apart from the eight submissions, there were a pair of knockouts and just two decisions. But it was the tapouts that everyone was talking about

FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – Refusing to touch gloves when your opponent offers one up at the start of a fight often winds up having bad karmic consequences. Such was the case for Mike Wilkinson – although Rony Jason’s jiu-jitsu had quite a bit to do with it, as well. Jason submitted Wilkinson with an triangle choke just 1:24 into the first round. The featherweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. It aired on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook. Jason wanted to touch gloves, but Wilkinson wanted nothing to do with it, staying on the outside.

Ralek Gracie’s Metamoris is Changing the Jiu-Jitsu Industry

Metamoris hosts its second event on June 9 in Los Angeles, and the elite invitational jiu-jitsu tournament is changing the landscape of the jiu-jitsu industry. “The jiu-jitsu industry is taking a turn where the standard format is a ten-minute match with points in different positions, and mainly top positions. So if you get in certain top position, whoever gets the most recent and most number of positions ends up winning the match,” Metamoris founder Ralek Gracie told MMAWeekly.com . “As a result, over time, what happens is people desire very eagerly to become champions in jiu-jitsu, they effectively train for a very positional game. And you end up seeing something that is kind of a different sport,” he said. Aside from taking promotional queues from mixed martial arts and leveraging the appeal of fighters like Shinya Aoki and Brendan Schaub in its events, Metamoris is also changing the fundamental structure of the competitions. Metamoris matches consist of a single 20-minute round where winners are determined by obtaining a submission or a clear-cut decision

Fabricio Werdum Wants to Show That He’s Ready to Be World Champion (UFC on Fuel TV 10 Video)

UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum is on the cusp of earning a UFC title shot. He takes on fellow Brazilian and MMA legend Antionio Rodrigo Nogueira in the UFC on Fuel TV 10 main event on Saturday in hopes of moving one step closer to a title fight. The two have fought once before in Japan under the Pride FC banner. Nogueira won the fight by unanimous decision, but this time Werdum feels things are going to be much different. “I think this fight will be a lot different than our last fight in 2006. I was a newcomer, but Nogueira was already a champion in the event. He was already very famous in MMA. I was purely a jiu-jitsu fighter,” Werdum told UFC.com .

Robert Drysdale signs with UFC, meets Ednaldo Oliveira at UFC 163

Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Robert Drysdale (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has signed with the UFC and will meet fellow light heavyweight Ednaldo Oliveira (13-1-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 163. UFC officials confirmed the fight by retweeting an initial report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal . UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub takes on nine-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu at Metamoris 2, a professional jiu-jitsu invitational event, on June 9. He’ll follow that with an MMA bout against The Ultimate Fighter housemate Matt Mitrione at UFC on Fox 8 on July 27. “It’s the pro bowl of jiu-jitsu. It’s as big as it gets,” Schaub told MMA video journalist Rick Lee about Metamoris. “It’s the 12 best jiu-jitsu guys in the world competing. It’s like an all-star game.” Schaub was invited to participate in the event, but didn’t think the UFC would allow him to do it with a fight scheduled in such close proximaty. “Jiu-jitsu is kind of my passion. They asked me if I could do it. I said I probably couldn’t because of the UFC and Dana White ,” said Shaub. “I saw Dana and I asked him, hey man, I don’t fight for a while, I want to stay competitive. I love jiu-jitsu. Do you mind if I do this jiu-jitsu match? He kind of hesitated. He goes, ‘You know what, don’t get hurt. Have fun.’ I was like, dang, called up Ralek (Gracie) right away and said I can do it.” The 30-year-old feels a lot of pressure to perform. “A lot of people are going, ‘It’s a win-win for Schaub. He might not win this, but it’s good that he can show off his ground.’ No. If I didn’t think I could beat this guy, I wouldn’t sign up for it. So it’s not a win-win,” he said. “If I don’t win, it is not good
