Filed under: Bellator , News Andre Fialho ’s journey through the MMA world has been filled with obstacles. However, no in-cage issue or management problem compares to the loss of a very good friend. Fialho (6-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) was rocked by the death of Joao Carvalho , who died following an April 9 TKO loss at an MMA event in Dublin. Now, as he prepares to enter the cage at Bellator 154, Fialho is dedicating some very big goals to his friend.

In this week’s Trading Shots, MMAjunkie columnist Ben Fowlkes and retired UFC/WEC fighter Danny Downes look at a recent tragedy in the MMA world , and wonder whether the sport will ever be safer than it is right now. * * * * Fowlkes: Danny, Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho died following a TKO loss at a Total Extreme Fighting event in Dublin, which is bound to prompt some soul-searching among fans who have touted MMA’s relative safety to boxing and football. UFC President Dana White says it’s preventable if you have extensive pre-fight medicals, good on-site medical staff, and good post-fight care. Is he right? Or does all that just mitigate a risk we can never fully eliminate? Joao Carvalho Downes: Given the nature of the sport, I don’t think it’s possible to make tragedies like what happened to Carvalho 100 percent preventable

UFC champ Conor McGregor responds to death of Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho

Filed under: News , UFC , Videos The recent death of Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho hit close to home for UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor . Carvalho (1-2), 28, suffered head injuries during a third-round TKO loss to Irish welterweight Charlie Ward, one of McGregor’s teammates, at a Total Extreme Fighting event April 9 at National Stadium in Dublin. McGregor was cageside supporting Ward at the fight, and today posted a message on his official Facebook page sending his condolences to Carvalho’s family in the wake of his death. Terrible news regarding Joao Carvalho.

Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho dies following MMA loss

Filed under: News Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho has died following a loss last weekend at an event in Dublin. Carvalho (1-2), 28, suffered head injuries during a third-round TKO loss to Irish welterweight Charlie Ward at the Total Extreme Fighting event, which took place April 9 at National Stadium. According to a TEF statement sent to MMAjunkie, medical personnel examined Carvalho after the fight and sent him to a local hospital for “emergency treatment,” which included brain surgery on Saturday.
