UFC veteran Matt Riddle recently called it quits after an injury forced him out of his scheduled Bellator bout. He told MMAJunkie.com that Bellator couldn’t get him back in another fight by the end of the year, leaving him without any financial means to sustain his family. So instead of sitting on the sidelines, Riddle said he had no choice but to retire and go get a regular job with a steady paycheck.

RIO DE JANEIRO – It wasn’t pretty, but Francimar Barroso came in on short notice and got the job done against Ednaldo Oliveira, taking home a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after three rounds. The light heavyweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and the pay-per-view main card. Barroso, a late replacement for Oliveira’s original opponent, Robert Drysdale, had to exercise caution when dealing with the much taller fighter’s reach early on.

He’s become a mighty poppa for the first time. The UFC tweeted out the news on Friday that Johnson and his wife, Destiny, welcomed the arrival of their first child, a baby boy. In a recent conference call with the media, Johnson was asked if the pending delivery of his first child added any pressure or inspiration leading up to his fight with Moraga. “No, no added pressure or no inspiration,” said Johnson. “Obviously, I’m happy to be a father, but everything is the same. So I’ve got to get it done, and then I’ll look to the future. “Of course, I really want to challenge for the Cage Warriors title, and some day, I want to get to the UFC.” But that’s the goal of pretty much everyone in Cage Warriors, if you ask them. The promotion increasingly is taking the role of a springboard to the Las Vegas-based fight organization, as the signing of featherweight champ Conor McGregor attests. A four-fight win streak such as the one Mason currently owns is just the kind of leverage needed to get into the octagon.

LAS VEGAS – Mike Pierce was well on his way to a snoozer of a win when his hands did the job quicker. Pierce smothered David Mitchell before landing a left hand that set the end in motion midway through the second frame. The welterweight bout opened up today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and a main card on pay-per-view. From the opening bell, Pierce refused to let Mitchell get any space to strike, and the two spent the bulk of the first frame in the clinch.
