WSOF 25 adds Burley vs. Condon, Madrid vs. Mustapayev as tournament reserve fights

Benny Madrid Next month’s one-night, eight-man lightweight tournament at WSOF 25, which will decide the next title challenger for champ Justin Gaethje’s title, has some insurance policies in place in the form of two reserve fights. In the quarterfinal round, if a winner is unable to advance to the semifinals due to injury, his opponent – who would have just lost the fight – will move on his place, WSOF officials announced today. However, if neither the winner nor loser can move on to the semis, a semifinalist will come in the form of the winner of one of the reserver bouts. Those reserve matchups will be between LaRue Burley (6-1) and Joe Condon (12-8), and Benny Madrid (8-3) vs. Ramil Mustapayev (3-1). WSOF 25 takes place Nov.

Newell (12-1) had to work for it a bit, but he took a unanimous decision from Joe Condon (12-8) in the lightweight co-main event of Friday’s WSOF 20. The fight took place at Foxwoods MGM Grand Theatre at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., and aired on NBCSN. Melvin Guillard pulled from Friday’s WSOF 20 co-headliner; Dugulubgov meets Montoya

Melvin Guillard Just four days from a planned bout with Ozzy Dugulubgov at WSOF 20, Melvin Guillard has been pulled from Friday’s fight card. MMAjunkie was today told “The Young Assassin” will not compete at WSOF 20 because WSOF executives have been unable to reach Guillard in the days ahead of the contest. “Obviously, we would have liked to have seen Melvin compete at this weekend’s event,” WSOF President Ray Sefo told MMAjunkie. “But it’s Monday, four days away from the fight, and we don’t have his medicals, nor have we heard from him. He has not responded to any of requests from our PR team to help promote the show, and we alerted his management team that if we did not receive his medicals by 10 a.m. today, we would have no choice but to pull him from the card, and unfortunately, that’s what we’ve been forced to do.” With Guillard (32-14-2) scrapped from the event, Lucas Montoya (8-3) moves up from a planned preliminary-card contest and faces lightweight Dugulubgov (6-2)

His plan for that deal is simple: start collecting some heads and earn a second shot at the WSOF lightweight title. Newell’s (11-1) first shot at that belt did not go well. This past July, lightweight champion Justin Gaethje bloodied the 28-year-old Newell on his way to a second-round TKO victory in WSOF 11’s main event. It was Newell’s first defeat since his amateur MMA debut in 2008. Between those two defeats Newell put together a 13-fight winning streak with a pair of amateur wins and a successful launch to his pro run.

WSOF 17 prelims get five additions to next week’s lineup in Las Vegas

With the addition of five preliminary-card fights, next week’s WSOF 17 card appears to be complete. A pair of lightweight bouts, a featherweight contest, a flyweight fight and a middleweight matchup will make up the prelims.
