Lightweight champion Joe McColgan has vacated his Cage Warriors title, setting up a new championship bout next month. McColgan (8-3-1) vacated the belt “due to personal matters affecting his ability to train,” according to an announcement from Cage Warriors. So a vacant lightweight title bout between George Hardwick (8-1) and Mehdi Ben Lakhdhar (5-0-1) will take place at Cage Warriors 131. The promotion announced the new title fight Tuesday for the event, which is set for Dec. 10 at York Hall in London

Unbeaten Welshman Mason Jones rose to the occasion on the biggest night of his career to capture the vacant Cage Warriors lightweight title at Cage Warriors 113 in Manchester. The event played out to a virtually empty BEC Arena, after being moved from the show’s original venue in London due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. But the lack of fan support in the stands certainly didn’t seem to affect the performances of the fighters, who served up a succession of entertaining fights throughout the card

Cage Warriors 113 weigh-in results: Coronavirus safety leads to unique circumstances

The weigh-ins are in the books for Friday’s Cage Warriors 113 event – which will go on in England despite the global coronavirus pandemic. Cage Warriors officials said in a Thursday release that the promotion invoked new safety measures in Manchester because of the COVID-19 outbreak. In particular, three separate weigh-ins took place throughout the day to decrease the number of people in one location at a time, according to the promotion. In addition, only one team member was allowed to accompany a fighter to the weigh-ins. The promotion also said all fighters were checked for coronavirus symptoms when they weighed in, as were all staff and crew members for the event prior to entering BEC Arena in Manchester.

Friday night’s Cage Warriors 113 card has undergone more late-notice changes. Travel restrictions in the region due to the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak have forced three fights to be removed from the event, which has been moved from London’s indigo at The O2 to Manchester’s BEC Arena. The event will be streamed live worldwide on UFC Fight Pass. The previously scheduled interim featherweight title fight between Morgan Charriere and Darko Banovic , as well as a flyweight title fight between champ Samir Faiddine and Luke Shanks , are both now off, as is the rearranged UFC London bout between John Phillips and Dusko Todorovic . Cage Warriors lightweight contenders Nathan Jones and Joe McColgan had hoped to emerge victorious from their respective fights at Cage Warriors 113 and earn themselves a shot at the lightweight title. Now the pair will face off with the vacant title up for grabs. Wales’ Jones (8-0) was set to face Danilo Belluardo, while Northern Ireland’s McColgan (6-2-1) was scheduled to take on Rafael Macedo, but after both opponents withdrew from the event through injury, Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan matched the two contenders head to head, with the promotion’s vacant 155-pound title on the line. McColgan has lost just once in his last six fights for the promotion – to new UFC signing and former 155-pound champ Jai Herbert – with two first-round submission finishes sandwiching a draw with Mehdi Ben Lakhdar that was awarded Cage Warriors’ 2019 Fight of the Year. Jones, meanwhile, is undefeated and heads into the event after picking up notable wins against Belgian contender Donovan Desmae and Finnish veteran Aleksi Mantykivi. The pair now will face off for the coveted title, which has been held by the likes of Conor McGregor, Stevie Ray, Chris Fishgold and Herbert, who all subsequently went on to sign for the UFC.

After an exciting card filled with spectacular finishes, the Cage Warriors 83 main event ended in an underwhelming and premature fashion when Che Mills suffered a knee injury just 18 seconds into his bout with Lewis Long . The welterweight fight, which served as the headliner for Saturday’s UFC Fight Pass-streamed event at Newport Centre in Newport, Wales, came to a conclusion quickly when Long (15-4) charged across the cage and scored a big takedown on the UFC veteran Mills (16-10). The second Mills’ back hit the canvas he immediately expressed a look of agony and tapped out. The referee jumped in for the stoppage, much to the confusion of both Long and the fans. Once it was evident Mills was injured, though, the mood shifted to a state of concern. Mills eventually was helped off the canvas by his team (with an assist from Long, as well) and exited the cage in what will officially go down as his fifth loss in his past seven fight.
