Anderson Silva already 2-to-1 favorite over Chris Weidman in potential rematch

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva already is a 2-to-1 favorite over the man who just took his title, Chris Weidman , should a potential rematch happen. Veteran oddsmaker Joey Oddessa on Tuesday confirmed the opening lines with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Oddessa said the line opened at -175, but within the first few hours already had been bet up to -200 for Silva. Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) put his title on the line against Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) at this past Saturday’s UFC 162. After a first round that saw Silva win on one judge’s scorecard, but Weidman on the other two, Silva started the second by continuing a pattern he has shown in the past – trying to bait his opponent in by ducking and dodging and asking Weidman to hit him. But right after getting hit and playing possum, Silva got hit with a Weidman left that put him on the canvas, and a few quick shots on the ground later his 16-fight UFC win streak and 10 middleweight title defenses had gone by the wayside. UFC President Dana White said following the event that he’ll be pushing for a rematch – even though Silva said Weidman is the new champion and he doesn’t want to fight for the title anymore.

Roy Nelson Sets UFC Record in UFC 161 Loss

Roy Nelson set the UFC record for heavyweights for most strikes absorbed without being knocked out following his UFC 161 loss on Saturday night in Winnipeg. “Roy Nelson broke a UFC record tonight: 437 significant strikes absorbed without being knocked out. It’s a new UFC record,” said UFC president Dana White during the event’s post-fight press conference. “ (Frank) Mir and Joey Beltran have been hit more as heavyweights, but knocked out. Roy does not get knocked out,” added White. Nelson was defeated by Stipe Miocic in the event’s co-main event in a one-sided fight that saw Miocic land numerous strikes. His fights with Junior dos Santos , Fabricio Werdum , and and Mir also contributed significantly to the 437 total. Known for his punching power, grappling ability and granite chin, Nelson’s ability to take shots has become epic. His toughness can’t be questioned, and now he has a record to prove it. Following up on several earlier announcements, UFC officials on Wednesday added Diego Brandao vs. Daniel Pineda to the UFC on Fox Sports 1 #1: Rua vs. Sonnen fight card in Boston. Brandao (17-8) made his way to the Octagon via the fourteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter. He slipped up in his follow-up performance, losing to Darren Elkins at UFC 146, but recovered with back-to-back victories over Joey Gambino and Pablo Garza at UFC 153 and UFC on Fuel TV 9, respectively.

A featherweight bout between Diego Brandao (17-8 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Daniel Pineda (18-9 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is the latest fight to be added to UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 in Boston. UFC officials announced the fight on Wednesday night. UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 takes place Aug. 17 at TD Garden in Boston and will be the promotion’s debut on the new cable network, which launches the same day.
