The Bellator lightweight was likely on his way to a TKO victory when he threw an illegal knee that rendered opponent John Alessio unable to continue at Bellator 139. “For some reason, I thought I was going to hit his shoulder, so in my head, I’d thrown to his shoulder,” Rickels told MMAjunkie Radio. “Then I realized I’d hit his head, and then I looked at the ref, and we gave each other the look like, ‘You’re in trouble now.’” Prior to the end of the fight, which came in the first-round, Rickels (16-3 MMA, 8-3 BMMA) had peppered Alessio (35-17 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) with big shots, forcing him to cover up and take a knee. “I don’t know in what parallel universe you smash a guy until he’s laying in the fetal position and then not win the fight,” Rickels said. “I don’t understand that.” Bellator 139 took place this past Friday at Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, Kan

UFC veteran John Alessio has signed to fight for Bellator MMA . Alessio and Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney on Saturday announced the signing via Twitter. Alessio (34-16) is expected to fight at lightweight in the Bellator Season 9 tournament. After 15 years in the sport, Alessio has fought for nearly every major fight promotion in the world. Bellator is one of the last corners of the promotional globe where he has yet to compete. He left the WEC in early 2008, but went on to put together an 11-3 record fighting for the largest regional promotions in the U.S. and Canada before a stint in the UFC. Nearly a year after the UFC cut him loose, John Alessio has signed a deal with Bellator MMA. Bellator officials confirmed Alessio’s signing to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) and said the fighter is expected to make his debut with the promotion sometime during Season 9, which begins in September on Spike TV. Although Alessio has fought much of his career at welterweight, he is expected to compete at 155 pounds this fall, where he dropped to 18 months ago. The Canadian lightweight first announced the news on his Facebook page late Friday. He did not disclose the length of the deal. “Very excited for this new chapter in my fight career,” Alessio wrote on Facebook.
