Ramos (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) tapped out John Gunther (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) with a rear-naked choke at the 1:57 mark of the first round. All three of his UFC wins have come by rear-naked choke. The bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 136 event at Pepsi Center in Denver

DENVER – Davi Ramos shot for the stars following his most recent win at UFC 224 in May when he asked for UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. Instead, he got John Gunther at UFC Fight Night 139. Although Ramos (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is just three fights into his UFC tenure, he felt ready to fight the unbeaten Nurmagomedov (27-0 MMA, 11-0 UFC) “any time.” That time is not now, though, because he’s set to fight Gunther (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who is coming off a stint on Season 27 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series. The obvious disparities between Nurmagomedov and Gunther don’t need to be pointed out, but Ramos said he’s not upset with the matchup

LAS VEGAS – Devonte Smith made it easy on the judges at Tuesday’s Dana White’s Contender Series 16, quickly stopping Joe Lowry in the night’s co-feature to earn a UFC contract. Now, Smith (8-1) is looking to make it easy on the promotion’s matchmakers, as well. Asked about his plans after the first-round knockout over fellow lightweight Lowry (8-1), Smith didn’t even need to hear a full sentence before blurting them out.

LAS VEGAS – John Gunther proved one of the more unique characters on “The Ultimate Fighter 27,” and he picked up where he left off when speaking to the media following his win on Friday’s card. Gunther (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) defeated Allan Zuniga (13-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) by majority decision at The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale, which took place at Pearl Theatre in Las Vegas and aired on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

If the last 30 seconds of Allan Zuniga ’s fight with John Gunther had looked like the preceding 14 minutes and 30 seconds, he would have walked away with his first octagon victory. Instead, Gunther (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) earned a majority decision with a smothering grappling attack that left Zuniga (13-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) largely ineffective on the canvas. The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s TUF 27 Finale event at Pearl Theatre at The Palms in Las Vegas. Teammates Mike Trizano and John Gunther were friendly during their stint on “The Ultimate Fighter 27” – so friendly that, even as they prepared to square off in the tournament’s semifinal round, they did a skit together for the first ever “TUF” talent show. The next day, at weigh-ins, the two went on to have a friendly face-off. With a spot in the lightweight tournament final of the still-ongoing season of the reality show on the line, though, the two Team Miocic fighters had to engage in a less-amicable exchange inside the cage. After three rounds, Trizano (6-0) was declared the winner via unanimous decision .

I’m back, people! Proving hard work pays off, it’s not shown much on the show due to the time restraint and format, but from the day I lost to Bryce Mitchell , I became obsessed with having my hand raised in the “TUF” cage. Losing highlighted to me everything I was there to do and everything I could gain from the experience of being on the show. It’s funny how the human psyche works like that: You never appreciate what you have in front of you until it’s taken from you. I was carrying a couple of injuries following the Bryce fight, but like most people, I kept it to myself. The difference between me and the others – and the reason I believe I was selected to return – is that I kept my head down and worked hard every day, whilst others who had also been knocked out of the tournament started to unwind and their motivation started slipping
