Former UFC fighter, BKFC champion Johnny Bedford announces retirement from combat sports

Johnny Bedford is done fighting. A former UFC fighter and BKFC bantamweight champion, Bedford officially announced his retirement from combat sports Wednesday. Bedford finishes with a pro MMA record of 23-14-1 and a bareknuckle boxing record of 6-1. “I ultimately had to make that hard-ass decision that I know that I can’t be ready to fight at the highest level,” Bedford said during the BKFC Holiday Giveaway podcast.

Former UFC fighter Johnny Bedford will take on Reggie Barnett for BKFC’s vacant 135-pound title in the main event. And another ex-UFC fighter, Alan Belcher , will make his BKFC debut when he takes on Tony Lopez in the middleweight co-main event. Pllus, Quentin Henry is set to take on Jason Fish at heavyweight. BRASILIA, Brazil – Controversy threatened to derail the rematch between Johnny Bedford (19-12-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and Rani Yahya (20-8 MMA, 5-2 UFC), but after a referee warning, the fight was allowed to reach its natural conclusion. After getting knocked out thanks in part to an accidental headbutt in the first meeting, which ended in a no-contest, Yahya exacted revenge in the second round by putting Bedford on the mat and cranking a kimura. The bantamweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 51 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass. The official end came at the 2:04 mark of the second frame when Bedford tapped violently with his foot after a hand tap proved insufficient. The win put Yahya back in the win column after a “no contest” marked their first fight and a previous appearance ended in a split decision loss to Tom Niinimaki

Johnny Bedford was pretty irked after the first time he fought Rani Yahya in April. That might be an understatement. At UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi, Bedford and Yahya only got to spend 39 seconds with each other before the fight was stopped. Bedford thought he had a TKO victory.
