The year 2013 was a monumental one for the UFC, from hosting the most events in history over the course of a 365-day span to adding to its first female weight class to perhaps the most important thing of all: some of the best fights ever seen inside the octagon. Now that the year has to a close, and with a major assist from FightMetric research analyst and live statistics producers Michael Carroll , here are some of 2013’s most significant milestones from the events, the fights and individual performances. EVENTS The UFC held 33 events in 27 different cities across seven countries. Within those events, there were 386 fights across nine different weight classes. UFC 163 Results: John Lineker Scores Second-Round TKO After Shaky First Round

John Lineker missed at the weigh-ins on Friday, but was dead-on the mark at UFC 163 on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, finishing Jose Maria early in the second round. Lineker’s victory wasn’t without some turbulence, though. While Lineker looked more calm and in control early in the opening round, just before the midway point, Maria rocked him with a spinning backfist. Lineker tried to answer, but was still wobbled, and ended up eating a few more shots from Maria. He tried to kick, but Maria drove him to the mat. That proved to be a saving grace for Lineker, however, as he kept scrambling and biding his time, finally making a recovery. “I got a little lost when he did that,” said Lineker after the fight. “But I was able to recover and go into my game, which is obviously striking.” That’s exactly what Lineker did, as he came out firing in round two.

RIO DE JANEIRO – A great start for Jose Maria turned into a somewhat bizarre finish, as a strong first round gave way to second round collapse and TKO finish at the hands of John Lineker. The bout, a 129-pound catchweight fight after Lineker came in heavy for the bout, took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired as part of the pay-per-view main card following prelims on FX and Facebook. Early on, it seemed that Maria was in total control. A spinning backfist in the first frame caught Lineker flush, and Maria’s follow up attacks kept his opponent on wobbly legs for much of the round

When the UFC signs a fighter, it’s for more than one bout in all but rare cases. That way, the promoter gets to protect its investment, and fighters get (somewhat) steady work. According to Jose Maria , he’s one of the exceptions. That, or he hasn’t read his contract very closely.

Flyweight contender John Lineker is honest about this weekend’s UFC 163 event: Replacement Jose Maria is probably a better fit than his original opponent, Phil Harris . Sure, Harris (22-10 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has won six of his past seven fights and recently defeated Ulysses Gomez at UFC on FUEL TV 7, and among your average MMA fan, he probably has more name recognition than promotional newcomer Maria (33-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Next month’s UFC 163 event has undergone yet another change, as Thiago “Marreta” Santos (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has stepped in to replace an injured Clint Hester (8-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and now meets Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira (5-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) on the evening’s main card. UFC officials recently announced the change to the lineup. Additionally, two bouts previously reported are now also official, with flyweights John Lineker vs. Jose Maria Tome and light heavyweights Francimar Barroso vs. Ednaldo Oliveira now set for the card.
