Joseph Benavidez decided to retire after realizing UFC title shot not possible, MMA would feel like a job

A perennial contender throughout his entire career, Joseph Benavidez knew it was time to walk away when he thought a UFC title was no longer in reach. A multiple-time title challenger, Benavidez (28-8 MMA, 19-7 UFC) came close to wrapping UFC gold around his waist on numerous occasions but fell short each time. However, the flyweight pioneer was able to continuously compete at the highest level by eliminating one top contender after another. But after back-to-back title fight losses to Deiveson Figueiredo, Benavidez wanted to test himself against the division’s elite one more time to see where he stood. He dropped a unanimous decision to Askar Askarov at UFC 259 in March, and the decision to hang up his gloves came shortly after – even though the public learned about it just a week ago.

A couple of UFC legends decided to call it a career last week as Joseph Benavidez and Carlos Condit announced their retirements from MMA. Benavidez closes out his career with a 28-8 overall record and 20-8 in UFC/WEC competition, while Condit ended 32-14 overall and 14-10 in the UFC/WEC. Between them, only one claimed major gold. Condit was a WEC welterweight champion with three title defenses before the promotion was absorbed by the UFC, where he claimed an interim title by beating Nick Diaz in February 2012 before losing an undisputed title fight to Georges St-Pierre by unanimous decision later that year. Benavidez, meanwhile, fell short five times of reaching the top. He first lost a WEC bantamweight title fight against Dominick Cruz in 2010.

Demetrious Johnson ’s career forever will be intertwined with Joseph Benavidez ’s. The flyweights fought twice in UFC title fights and were responsible for building the men’s 125-pound division in the UFC as two of the original four fighters in the weight class for the promotion. It’s been almost a decade since the birth of flyweight in the UFC and Johnson now is the only active fighter left from the first four. Emotional Joseph Benavidez opens up on retirement, says he made decision a while back

The news that he was officially retired came out a little sooner than Joseph Benavidez expected, but it’s a decision he came to terms with a while back. After fans noticed his name was removed from the UFC’s flyweight rankings, speculations arose and the news later became official that multiple-time title challenger and perennial contender Benavidez has decided to hang up his gloves. Although it wasn’t news to Benavidez (28-8 MMA, 19-7 UFC) himself, the 37-year-old couldn’t help but get emotional when he saw the public’s support and praise for his accomplished career. “I’ve known I’ve been retired, so I didn’t also think it would be an emotional thing,” Benavidez said. “But just reading a bunch of stuff, I was crying in the backyard – so it’s been a good day.

Joseph Benavidez has retired. A longtime contender, Benavidez (28-8 MMA, 19-7 UFC) has hung up his gloves after 36 professional MMA fights – 26 of which came in the UFC. A staple of the UFC flyweight division’s upper echelon, Benavidez challenged for the 125-pound title on four occasions – twice against Demetrious Johnson and twice against Deiveson Figueiredo. MMA Junkie verified the news with multiple people close to the situation, who requested anonymity because Benavidez has yet to officially make the announcement. According to sources, Benavidez instructed the UFC to remove him from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing pool

Askar Askarov entered and exited UFC 259 without a loss on his resume. On the UFC 259 prelims Saturday, Askarov (14-0-1 MMA, 3-0-1 UFC) defeated former UFC flyweight title challenger Joseph Benavidez with a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26). The flyweight bout was part of the UFC 259 preliminary card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
