LONDON – If Marc Diakiese had gotten his wish, he wouldn’t have even fought at UFC on ESPN+ 5. A trio of losses made him think he needed time to rebuild himself on the local circuit before getting back to the big show. “After the last fight, I wanted to get released (from contract), because I felt I’m young and learning, but I’m getting beat by mistakes,” Diakiese told reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage at The O2. Obviously, not getting his wish turned out pretty well. Diakiese (13-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) snapped his skid with a dominant win over Joseph Duffy (16-4 MMA, 4-3 UFC), outworking the Irish veteran for a unanimous decision

Joseph Duffy could gloat about his win over UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor , but he’s not that type of guy. Even when McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) gave him a prime chance backstage at “The Time is Now” press conference , Duffy (17-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) took a subtler approach to reminding the Irish champ who was boss. Right before McGregor took to the stage to harrass Jose Aldo (26-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in advance of their title unifier at UFC 194, Duffy said the then-interim featherweight champ started in on him.

Early last year, ahead of a UFC Fight Night 107 encounter with Reza Madadi that was the last fight on his UFC contract, Joseph Duffy made it clear that his staying wasn’t a given . Duffy (17-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) went on to beat Madadi via unanimous decision. And, as evidenced by the fact he’s been in the octagon once more since, against James Vick, he ultimately did decide to stay – for another contracted seven fights. That doesn’t mean Duffy didn’t contemplate other options. But after a period of sitting back and dealing with outside-the-octagon things – such as moving apartments – he was satisfied with what he got. “I just didn’t want to rush anything,” Duffy told MMAjunkie Radio.

Vick (12-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) picked up his eighth victory in a nine-fight UFC career on Saturday when he became the first to stop Duffy (17-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) with strikes. It was another solid performance, and having competed in the featured preliminary-bout prior to the pay-per-view main card at Madison Square Garden in New York, Vick hopes he’s finally put the division on notice. “What else can I do?” Vick said following his win.

James Vick kept on rolling Saturday night and wants the kind of name that will make him a contender in the lightweight division. Vick (12-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) stopped Joseph Duffy (17-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) with a TKO with one second left in the second round after planting him with a big right uppercut. The lightweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC 217 event at Madison Square Garden in New York. It aired on FS1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view. Related UFC 217 play-by-play and live results Duffy went to the center early and Vick circled outside. Vick landed a solid kick to the midsection 45 seconds in, but briefly took a seat when Duffy nearly caught it
