Josh Burkman retires after split-decision loss at LFA 66

One of MMA’s most game competitors has officially called it a career. Josh Burkman announced his retirement on Friday night after losing a highly competitive matchup to William Macario at LFA 66. The bout was contested in West Valley City, Utah, a suburb of Burkman’s hometown of Salt Lake City. A tough out every time he stepped into the cage, Burkman finishes with a career record of 28-18. The 39-year-old Burkman began his career in 2003, and his notable victories include Gerald Harris, Jon Fitch, and K.J. Noons.

Just past his 39th birthday, veteran fighter Josh Burkman adds another promotion to his long resume Friday night. Burkman (28-17), who had 18 fights in the UFC (plus a no-contest), takes on William Macario (9-4), also a UFC vet, in the LFA 66 welterweight co-main event in front of his home-state fans. LFA 66 takes place at Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, near Salt Lake City. The main card airs on AXS TV. Burkman went 6-12 over two tenures with the UFC. The product of Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter” went 5-5 in his first stint with the promotion and found himself trying to get back after a three-fight skid in 2008.

UFC vets Josh Burkman, William Macario meet in LFA 66 co-main event

A pair of UFC veterans will square off in a welterweight fight when LFA returns to Utah next month. Josh Burkman (28-17) is set to take on William Macario (9-4) in the LFA 66 co-main event, the promotion today announced. LFA 66 takes place May 10 at Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, near Salt Lake City. The main card airs on AXS TV. “I am excited to announce that Utah MMA pioneer and longtime UFC star Josh Burkman will return to action in the co-main event of LFA 66,” LFA CEO Ed Soares stated. “Burkman made his pro debut in Utah over 16 years ago and has gone on to become one of the most successful and respected fighters in the state’s impressive combat sports history.” Burkman went 6-12 over two tenures with the UFC.

Still, though, the overwhelming majority of fighters in the sport overcome their physical setbacks and eventually find their way back to competition.

Apparently it wasn’t good enough for Alex Morono to beat a 15-year veteran of the sport in Josh Burkman . No, instead of satisfying himself with a submission over a competitor on Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” now Morono wants to reach all the way back to the first season for a fight with Diego Sanchez . If Morono didn’t come off as such a nice guy, it might almost feel predatory. At UFC Fight Night 126 on Sunday, Morono (14-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) needed just a shade over two minutes to drop Burkman (28-17 MMA, 6-12 UFC) with a punch, then submit him with the very same guillotine that’s been Burkman’s own go-to finish for years. UFC officials today announced that Josh Burkman (28-16 MMA, 6-11 UFC) will face Alex Morono (13-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 126, which takes place next Sunday at Frank Erwin Center in Austin. The contest is scheduled for the evening’s UFC Fight Pass-streamed early prelims following additional prelims and a main card that each air on FS1. Both fighters find themselves in need of a victory.
