The instructor of the martial arts school where Josh Neer was caught on video elbowing and then kicking the face of another man said the incident is being blown out of proportion. “It wasn’t the beatdown that that last 14 seconds makes everyone think,” Pete Peterson, the owner and head instructor of RoundKick gym in Urbandale, Iowa, today told MMAjunkie.

Josh Neer posts video of gym beating after reported challenge

Veteran welterweight Josh Neer is making headlines today after posting a video that shows him violently beating a man he said had repeatedly challenged him to fight. Neer, 31, called the man, named in a report as Patrick Smith, a “moron” who’d “been talking shit about MMA fighters for a month” to him on Facebook and asking to fight. Neer told BloodyElbow.com he relented after more messages and invited Smith to his gym. He provided shapshots of Smith’s messages. He said Smith requested to fight him rather than a larger sparring partner and that he posted the video after Smith continued to message him after their encounter

Bellator MMA’s return to Iowa next month will feature a pair of the state’s native sons in the main event. Iowans Josh Neer (36-13-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) and Paul Bradley (21-6 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) will meet in the Bellator 129 main event, sources with knowledge of the fight booking on Monday told MMAjunkie. Mike Pyle replaces Thiago Alves vs. Matt Brown at UFC on FOX Sports 1 1

Thiago Alves ‘ road back to the octagon will wait once again. Alves (19-9 MMA, 11-6 UFC) has been forced out of his welterweight bout against Matt Brown (17-11 MMA, 10-5 UFC) at UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 in August, and Mike Pyle (25-8-1 MMA, 8-3 UFC) will step in as his replacement. The UFC announced the change on Wednesday. The fight is expected to be part of the six-fight main card. UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 takes place Aug. 17 at TD Garden in Boston and will be the UFC’s debut on the new FOX Sports 1 cable network. Pyle has won four straight fights following a TKO loss to Rory MacDonald in August 2011. He started his current run with three straight knockouts, including a first-round “Knockout of the Night” stoppage of Josh Neer 13 months ago.

Octagon Newcomer Brandon Thatch Squares Off with Justin Edwards at UFC on Fox Sports 1 #2

UFC officials on Wednesday announced the addition of a welterweight bout between Justin Edwards and promotional newcomer Brandon Thatch to UFC on Fox Sports 1 #2, which takes place on Aug. 28 in Indianapolis. Edwards (8-2) made his way to the Octagon as a replacement fighter on the thirteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter. He didn’t progress far on the reality show, but he has remained with the UFC for the past two years, alternating between wins and losses in his four bouts for the promotion. He enters the fight with Thatch having submitted Josh Neer at UFC on FX 5 last October. Edwards was supposed to have faced Gunnar Nelson in February, but pulled out of the fight due to injury. Thatch (9-1) makes his long awaited UFC debut after having racked up eight consecutive victories. He most recently defeated Mike Rhodes in the RFA 7 main event in March
