Report: Josh Samman’s death ruled ‘probable drug overdose’

UFC middleweight Josh Samman ’s death has been ruled a probable drug overdose. The Broward County (Fla.) Medical Examiner’s office issued the official cause of death today after an autopsy on Samman’s friend showed he died of a “massive” accidental drug overdose. Broward County’s Chief Medical Examiner Craig Mallak confirmed the news to MMAjunkie after an initial report from TMZ . Samman’s friend, Troy Kirkingburg, had heroin, cocaine, Xanax, and ethanol (or alcohol) in his system when he died, the autopsy revealed. Mallak told TMZ he determined the cause of death because he was found with Kirkingburg and tested positive for drugs at the hospital he was rushed to after police were called on a suspected drug overdose. Samman came to the UFC courtesy of “The Ultimate Fighter 17,” where he fought under Jon Jones.

Memorial service for UFC vet Josh Samman set for Friday in Tallahassee

Samman’s “Celebration of Life” will be held at The Moon in Tallahassee, Fla., where the fighter grew up and spent his formative years. A fund, via crowdfunding site YouCaring.com , has also been set up with the aim of helping young MMA fighters train as professionals.

UFC middleweight Josh Samman is dead less than a week after he was found unresponsive in a South Florida apartment. Samman, 28, had been in a coma at Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., six days after police were called to the apartment for a suspected drug overdose and found the fighter and a deceased friend. MMAjunkie confirmed the news with Samman’s longtime friend Christopher Rothstein, who posted on his Facebook page: “My heart is heavy, as are so many others this morning, as today the world has lost an amazing human being. Rest in peace Josh Samman, you were one of the good guys.” Samman’s teammate on “The Ultimate Fighter 17,” Gilbert Smith, posted on Instagram : “Dude was a Warrior and probably one of the most intelligent fighters I know

The middleweight bout was part of the main card of the UFC Fight Night 91 event at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. It aired on FS1 following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
