Ronda Rousey Says Coaching TUF 18 Has Been Emotionally Taxing

UFC women’s middleweight champion Ronda Rousey says coaching season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter has been emotionally taxing and tiring, but the experience exceeded her expectations. Rousey (7-0) was named the first female coach of the popular reality show and was originally supposed to coach opposite Cat Zingano . Zingano earned the opportunity to coach The Ultimate Fighter and solidified her place as No. 1 contender to Rousey’s crown by defeating Miesha Tate in April. A knee injury, however, forced Zingano off the show and out of the anticipated title fight with Rousey. She was replaced by Rousey’s longtime rival, Tate. During the UFC 161: Henderson vs. Evans media day on June 14, UFC president Dana White said the filming of this season of the reality is going “bad.” “Miesha and Ronda hate each other,” said White. “It’s like literally crazy drama every day.” For Rousey, coaching has been more work than she anticipated. “It’s a lot more work than I thought it would be, and it’s a lot more emotionally taxing than I thought it would be. You care a lot about these kids. I just felt like any kind of heartbreak or triumph, whatever they’re going through, I share in it. It’s exhausting going through that over and over and over with every competitor,” she said during a Facebook chat sponsored by Metro PCS on Wednesday

McCarthy on Mazzagatti criticism: ‘Safety of [Fitch] wasn’t in jeopardy’

Following Josh Burkman ‘s submission victory over Jon Fitch earlier this month in World Series of Fighting 3′s headliner, referee Steve Mazzagatti came under fire for an apparent late stoppage. One fellow ref, though, has come to his defense. Veteran official “Big” John McCarthy, who’s been policing the cage for two decades, doesn’t agree with the recent scathing criticism from Dana White . Following UFC 161, the UFC president, who’s long spoken out against Mazzagatti, said the ref is “dangerous” and “will seriously hurt somebody.” McCarthy, though, said the nature of the stoppage – Burkman actually broke the guillotine choke and showed Fitch was unconscious, before Mazzagatti noticed – wasn’t as serious as some have made it out to be. While McCarthy said Mazzagatti should have shifted to the other side of the fighters to get a better look at Fitch while he was in the choke, he said little damage was done in the June 14 fight

All World Series of Fighting 3 Athletes Drug Tested; All Return Clean Results

Every fighter at the recent World Series of Fighting 3 event was drug tested and every fighter returned negative results. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer informed MMAWeekly.com of the WSOF 3 drug test results on Monday. World Series of Fighting 3: Fitch vs. Burkman took place on June 14 at The Joint at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

World Series of Fighting 3 drug tests come back clean

All 18 fighters who competed at this month’s World Series of Fighting 3 card tested clean for performance-enhancing drugs and recreational drugs/drugs of abuse. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today received the drug-testing results from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the June 14 event at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The main event saw former UFC fighters Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman meeting in a welterweight bout. It was Fitch’s debut with the promotion after being unexpectedly released by the UFC earlier this year. Burkman clipped Fitch with a punch early in the fight in an exchange, knocking him off his feet. Burkman immediately pounced him him and locked in a standing guillotine choke. He dropped to his back and held the choke until Fitch went limp – when he released the hold, stopping the fight himself. The fight has become controversial because of referee Steve Mazzagatti not seeing that Fitch was out and stopping the fight himself.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the World Series of Fight 3: Fitch vs. Burkman 2 gate and attendance figures on Friday. The event took place on June 14 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Casino in Las Vegas. 2,501 spectators witnessed the organization’s third event with 1,107 tickets sold and 186 unsold. Complimentary tickets totaled 1,394. Gate receipts returned $106,573 in revenue for the nine-fight card. The WSOF 3 fighter salaries clocked in at $200,000. Josh Burkman avenged a previous loss to Jon Fitch in the main event, submitting the former UFC welterweight contender by guillotine choke in the first round. The main card aired live on NBC Sports Network.

Josh Burkman established himself as the promotion’s top welterweight by upsetting the incoming Jon Fitch in the night’s main event, while Steve Carl put his name in the welterweight mix with a win over Tyson Steele. WSOF 3 took place Friday, June 14, at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The following figures are based on the fighter salary information that promoters are required by law to submit to the state athletic commissions, including the winners’ bonuses. UFC 161 weigh-ins set for June 14 in Winnipeg, T.J. Grant hosts Q&A

Official fighter weigh-ins for “UFC 161: Evans vs. Henderson” are slated for June 14 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The same venue then hosts the following night’s pay-per-view event, which features a light heavyweight fight between former UFC champion Rashad Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) and former PRIDE champ Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in the main event. Jacob Volkmann, Jon Fitch hit pause on WSOF 3 to discuss MMA fighters’ union

A middle-of-the-road media teleconference briefly turned into an informal union meeting as World Series of Fighting signees Jacob Volkmann (15-4) and Jon Fitch (24-5-1) swapped ideas about collective bargaining. “I did have a question for Fitch after this question,” Volkmann said in response to a query from MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) about his feelings about the promotion. “I was wondering if Fitch wanted to get a fighter’s union started for the UFC, to see if we can get a union started so fighters have a little better pay and a little more leverage in their contract.” As it turned out, Fitch already was on the same page. Like Volkmann, he had been unceremoniously released from the industry-leader following a loss and signed with the WSOF. In several interviews after his departure, he criticized the UFC’s business practices. Both Fitch and Volkamnn will turn over a new leaf when they compete on June 14 at the upstart promotion’s third event, which takes place at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The event’s main-card airs live on NBC Sports Network following prelims that will stream at MMAjunkie.com

Then he and the crowd at the 2008 “Strikeforce at the Dome” in Tacoma, Wash., got a big surprise. They turned on two floodlights, and I said, ‘Are we really gonna finish the fight like this?’ It was so hard to see.” The fight did finish, and Courchaine suffered a knockout loss, part of an 0-2 start to his pro career that made him question whether it was worth taking the time away from his roofing company and his family to train.
