UFC 163 medical suspensions: Headliners Aldo, Jung get lengthy terms

As pictures indicated, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered a serious foot injury that could keep him out of action for three months. The UFC 163 medical suspensions, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently requested and today received, indicate Aldo has been given a 90-day term, including 60 days with no contact for a fracture of his right foot. Chan Sung Jung , who challenged Aldo at this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event, could be out even longer. He was suspended 180 days or until cleared by a doctor for a shoulder dislocation that helped bring a halt to the title fight in the fourth round when Aldo took advantage after seeing the injury and earned a TKO stoppage. UFC 163 took place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Its main card aired live on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook

The Brazilian Athletic Commission (CABMMA) on Monday released the UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie medical suspensions to MMAWeekly.com. The medical suspensions were issued by Dr. Marcio Tannure. Every fighter on the card received at least a mandatory 14-day suspension. Several fighters, including main event fighters Jose Aldo and Chan Sung Jung (aka the Korean Zombie), received much lengthier suspensions, pending medical clearance.

Following his UFC 163 featherweight title defense against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung , on Saturday, champion Jose Aldo believed he suffered a broken foot in the opening round. “He knew that I was going be giving him low kicks, so the first combination I think he left his knee there. I kicked straight at his knee. I don’t know if I broke my foot. It’s very swollen. I can barely walk properly,” said Aldo during the UFC 163 post-fight press conference on Saturday. Aldo attended the post-fight press conference, but departed early to go to the hospital and have his foot evaluated. On Monday, MMAWeekly.com confirmed that Aldo did indeed suffer a fractured foot. The featherweight titleholder has been medically suspended for 90 days with no contact for at least 60 days. Aldo was up on the scorecards, winning the first three rounds. Jung dislocated his right shoulder throwing a combination in the fourth round. Noticing the injury, Aldo unleashed a flurry of strikes, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Aldo (23-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC), the UFC’s featherweight champion, defended his title with a fourth-round TKO of Chan Sung Jung (13-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in the main event of UFC 163, which took place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janiero. Aldo won the fight not long after Jung, “The Korean Zombie,” appeared to separate his right shoulder throwing a combination. When Aldo saw the shoulder injury, he took advantage and got a fairly quick TKO in the fourth round. But after the fight, Aldo said he was injured, too. UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo defended his 145-pound title at UFC 163 on Saturday by defeating “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung , but may have suffered a broken foot early in the title bout. “When the fight started the first thing I did, I kicked him and he put his knee, so the first time I kicked him I don’t know if I broke my foot. I don’t know, it is very swollen,” said Aldo during the post-fight press conference. “He knew that I was going be giving him low kicks, so the first combination I think he left his knee there. I kicked straight at his knee. I don’t know if I broke my foot. It’s very swollen. I can barely walk properly,” he added. Kicks at a high volume are typical when Aldo fights, but he had to make adjustments early on to deal with the foot injury. “I had to change my strategy. I had to totally change it,” he said. “We tried to control it in a different way. Everyone already expects for me to be kicking low kicks, but I’m a complete fighter. I always try to practice everything,” said the champion. “Whereever the fight goes, I always try to use all my weapons. I don’t only have one weapon.
