Jussier Formiga (24-8) was victorious in his first bout outside of the UFC in almost 10 years, choking out countryman Felipe Bunes (11-6) in the second round. The contest served as the main event of Friday’s LFA 124 event, which streamed live on UFC Fight Pass from Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix. While the action was relatively even-keeled in the opening round, Formiga was able to slip to back control late in the frame, where he showed the skillset that made him a dangerous contender throughout his octagon run

The UFC is gearing up for a major trimming of its roster, and although that generally sounds like bad news, there could be some long-term positives for mixed martial arts on the horizon. This past Saturday following UFC on ESPN 19, UFC president Dana White told reporters that the promotion is planning to release about 60 fighters from their contracts before the end of 2020. White said the roster is “very inflated right now” and that “serious cuts” were on the way. The news came shortly after the release of Yoel Romero , a multiple-time UFC title challenger and perennial contender at middleweight. But this shouldn’t be a surprise . Back in August, White had a similar message when asked about how the large influx of newcomers from Dana White’s Contender Series would affect the promotion.

Alex Perez might not have gone into UFC 250 on the short list of contenders for the vacant flyweight title, but he sure came out of it as a hot fighter at 125 pounds. And unfortunately for his part, Jussier Formiga isn’t likely to run or ride a bike any time over the next several days. Perez (24-5 MMA, 6-1 UFC) put his division on notice by taking out one of flyweight’s longstanding contenders in Formiga (23-8 MMA, 9-7 UFC) on Saturday night during the preliminary card in Las Vegas. Perez did so via TKO, but it was one of the rarest forms of TKO: the calf kick. Perez clobbered Formiga with calf kicks, connecting with his right leg to the lower portion of Formiga’s right. The first Brazilian UFC card of 2020 is taking shape. In a Thursday press release, the promotion announced a handful of fights for UFC Brasilia on March 14. Among them, a flyweight battle between Jussier Formiga (22-6 MMA, 8-5 UFC) and Brandon Moreno (16-5-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC). Formiga looks to rebound from a second-round TKO loss to Joseph Benavidez in his last fight. That resulted ended a four-fight win streak. Moreno, meanwhile, gets right back to work after his unanimous-decision victory over Kai Kara-France at UFC 245
