Amanda Nunes Brazilian standout Amanda Nunes took a big step towards a UFC women’s bantamweight title shot with a quick and dominant victory on Aug. 8 at UFC Fight Night 73 in Nashville. Nunes picked up her second straight first-round stoppage win by submitting Olympic silver Sara McMann with a rear-naked choke. Nunes (11-4 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has been on the cusp of UFC title contention for more than a year, but a disappointing loss to future title challenger Cat Zingano in September delayed Nunes’ journey to the belt. Against McMann (8-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC), Nunes put forth her best showing to date en route and scored her biggest career victory.

Katja Kankaanpaa and Livia Renata Souza Invicta FC 12 weigh-ins took place today, and strawweight title holder Katja Kankaanpaa (114.6) and challenger Livia Renata Souza (113.9) each came in under the championship limit. The weigh-ins took place at the Holiday Inn Kansas City Downtown – Aladdin Hotel. The nearby Municipal Auditorium hosts Friday’s UFC Fight Pass-streamed event. Not everyone on the card was able to meet their contracted weight. Flyweight Vanessa Porto , bantamweight Raquel Pa’aluhi, featherweight Latoya Walker and strawweight Jenny Liou each missed weight on their first trip to the cage. Only Pa’aluhi was able to make weight on her second trip to the scale, though she was still fined 15 percent of her purse

Paige VanZant and Felice Herrig Proving her critics wrong again, Paige VanZant earned her second octagon victory in impressive fashion on Saturday night at UFC on FOX 15 in Newark, N.J. Competing in her most high-profile bout to date, the 21-year-old Reebok-sponsored fighter easily defeated veteran contender Felice Herrig in a featured strawweight bout on the FOX-televised main card. Leading into Saturday’s fight, some predicted that the hype surrounding VanZant (5-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) would come to an abrupt halt with a loss to Herrig (10-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who has been competing professionally in MMA for more than six years. Instead, just as she did in her November UFC debut, VanZant silenced doubters with another commanding victory. Herrig’s best success came in Round 1 when she threatened with a rear-naked choke after reversing a takedown. However, VanZant has proven to be highly adept at escaping from submissions throughout her young career, and Saturday was no different.

Invicta FC 12 card finalized, tickets on sale

Ediane Gomes The full card for Invicta FC 12 has been finalized with a total of 10 fights announced for the April 24 event. Invicta FC 12 takes place at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The event streams live in its entirety on UFC Fight Pass. Tickets are currently on sale for the event, headlined by a strawweight title fight between champion Katja Kankaanpaa (10-1-1) and challenger Livia Renata Souza (7-0). Ticket prices for the card are $150, $75, $50 and $35 at Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, and the Municipal Auditorium box office. Some of the featured newly announced bouts for the finalized card include a bantamweight battle between Ediane Gomes (10-3) and Raquel Pa’aluhi (4-4), Jenny Liou (3-1) looking for her fourth win in five career fights when she faces Lacey Schuckman (10-8) in a strawweight fight and a pair of atomweights who have turned their careers around after both losing their first three pro bouts in Cassie Rodish (5-4) and Stephanie Skinner (4-5).

Katja Kankaanpaa Invicta FC strawweight champion Katja Kankaanpaa will defend her title in April when the promotion returns to Kansas City. Kankaanpaa (10-1-1) will defend her 115-pound title for the first time when she meets the unbeaten Livia Renata Souza (7-0) in the Invicta FC 12 main event. Invicta officials announced the card and booking after an initial report from ESPN.com . Invicta FC 12 will take place April 24 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., which also played host to Invicta FC 8 this past September. The event will stream live in its entirety on UFC Fight Pass. Kankaanpaa, from Finland, got her shot at Invicta’s strawweight title after the UFC purchased the contract of the bulk of the promotion’s 115-pounders to compete on Season 20 of “The Ultimate Fighter” and build its inaugural roster in the weight class.

However, the contest unfortunately ended a bit early when a cut above Chiesa’s eye forced the cageside doctor to stop the bout in the second round. After a competitive start, the turning point came when Lauzon landed an elbow that sliced open Chiesa and led to the end.

With Invicta FC 8, which features a championship doubleheader, the organization makes its debut on the UFC Fight Pass digital network. After hosting seven events in 2012 and 2013, Invicta holds its first event of 2014, and it comes after it struck an alliance with the UFC. Veteran AXS TV broadcaster Michael Schiavello and Invicta FC matchmaker Julie Kedzie call the action, which kicks off at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on UFC Fight Pass.
