UFC 295 marked the 30th anniversary of the promotion. Over three decades, the UFC – and the sport of MMA as a whole – has evolved tremendously. If evidence is needed, go back and watch the promotion’s first event ever – which is now available in full, for free. UFC 1 took place Nov. 12, 1993, at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver with a reported 7,800 fans in attendance. The one-night tournament-style fight card filled with openweight matchups featured eight fights.

It was a reunion 30 years in the making. The UFC celebrates its 30th anniversary Nov. 12 and the promotion recently organized a get-together for the six remaining living tournament participants. The six pioneers met over dinner at an undisclosed location and shared drinks, food, laughs, and memories. The gathering was recorded and released in a video segment published Saturday entitled “ Fighter of the Roundtable .” On hand were Gerard Gordeau and Taylor Wily (known as Teila Tuli during his fighting days), the two fighters from the first-ever UFC bout. UFC Hall of Famers Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie were also on hand, as were Art Jimmerson and Zane Frazier

Ken Shamrock is bringing back pitfighting, bare-knuckle style. The UFC Hall of Famer wants to thrill the crowd by putting combatants in a pit when Valor Bare Knuckle holds its inaugural event on Sept. 21. “You saw when it came to the cage when you saw UFC and no-holds barred era,” Shamrock told MMA Junkie. “It was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ I think our design will have that same effect.” Shamrock declined to go into details about the design but said VIP fans will get an unobstructed view for the bare-knuckle boxing fights at 4 Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town, N.D.

Two of MMA’s biggest stars played to the cameras Friday, with UFC Hall of Famers Ken Shamrock and Chuck Liddell facing off in Las Vegas. Shamrock and Liddell were in attendance at the Olympia Weekend Expo to help promote the launch of the LIMITLESS line of health and fitness products, and they took a moment to stand face-to-face, teasing a fight between two pioneers of the sport. Shamrock, 55, made his debut for the UFC at the company’s inaugural event, famously losing to fellow MMA legend Royce Gracie in the semifinals of that night’s eight-man tournament in 1993. Liddell, 49, came to the sport five years after Shamrock, debuting at UFC 17 in 1998. He would go on to become one of the most recognizable athletes in the history of the sport, registering four successful defenses of the UFC light heavyweight belt between 2005 and 2006, when the sport was just starting to emerge into mainstream awareness.

UFC 25 video: ‘The Lion’s Den – The Story of the First Mixed Martial Arts Team’

UFC officials recently announced that the promotion’s Emmy-nominated short film series, “UFC 25 Years in Short,” is no longer exclusive to UFC Fight Pass. Originally released in 2018, the compilation of 25 short films was produced to celebrate the UFC’s 25th anniversary. In April, the docuseries received a Sports Emmy Award nomination in the “Outstanding Edited Sports Special or Series” category. “‘UFC 25 Years in Short’ premiered on UFC Fight Pass in fall of 2018, so the time is right to showcase it to a new audience,” UFC senior vice president of production and programming Chris Kartzmark stated. On Wednesday, the promotion released the second film in the series, “THE LION’S DEN: The Story of the First Mixed Martial Arts Team.” The official description, courtesy of the UFC: In 1994, Ken Shamrock assembled the first ever MMA team – the Lion’s Den – and showed success in the ultimate individual sport was a team effort.
