WSOF 4′s Tyrone Spong finds transition between MMA, kickboxing ‘nothing special’

Just because they’re both combat sports doesn’t mean it should be easy for a kickboxer to give MMA a shot — and have relative ease picking the new sport up. But that’s pretty much how it worked for Tyrone Spong (1-0), who next month fights for just the second time in his pro MMA career – and carries the card for World Series of Fighting 4 as the main event against Angel DeAnda (11-2). Spong’s MMA debut in November at WSOF 1 was so impressive when he knocked out Travis Bartlett in the first round that he went straight to the top of the heap for the Las Vegas-based promotion. “I feel very special that they put me as the main event, and I think it’s also due to the fans,” Spong told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “That card (in November), I wasn’t going to be on the main card – I was going to be on the undercard. Ray Sefo temporarily steps down as WSOF boss, joins Saturday’s WSOF 4 fan fest

Ray Sefo recently announced he’s temporarily stepping down as president of the World Series of Fighting promotion, and ahead of his WSOF 4 fight, he’ll join the WSOF Fan Fest on Saturday. Officials recently announced details for the one-day fan event, which takes place at Dave & Buster’s (4821 Mills Circle) in Ontario, Calif., from noon to 4 p.m. PT. Ontario also plays host to WSOF on Aug. 10, where Sefo (2-1), a veteran kickboxer and boxer who’s also dabbled in MMA, meets fellow heavyweight Dave Huckaba (20-5) in an NBC Sports Network-televised main-card bout. The 42-year-old Sefo, who competes professionally for the 88th time in combat sports, stepped down as WSOF president so he can concentrate fully on his bout. “I’m looking forward to another chance to step into the cage, but before I do, I felt taking a temporary leave from my executive duties was the right thing to do,” Sefo stated earlier this week

With Bisping fight a no-go, UFC’s Cung Le focused on ‘TUF: China’

Cung Le really wanted a fight with Michael Bisping , but with the potential bout now a no-go, the UFC middleweight is hoping to focus his efforts on China. More specifically, he’s hoping a potential coaching gig on “The Ultimate Fighter: China,” which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently reported as likely, comes to fruition. Le, a longtime Sanshou kickboxer, believes a footprint in the country could be massive for the UFC. “I’m here to help out any way I can with UFC in China,” Le recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio. “I think it’s a huge market, and once they break into there, it’s truly going to be global.” “TUF: China” debuts in November, and a live finale is targeted for March in Macau. Producers are searching for UFC hopefuls from the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions who speak Mandarin and are of Chinese descent. No head coaches have been formally announced the show, though Le (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) appears to be a frontrunner.
