NSAC to present Brian Bowles’ UFC 160 complaint uncontested at next meeting

The Nevada State Athletic Commission is proceeding with a disciplinary complaint against bantamweight Brian Bowles despite not hearing back from the fighter on his failed drug test. Bowles’ post-fight drug screen at UFC 160 came back with a testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of more than 20-1, according to the NSAC. The commission temporarily suspended the fighter pending a formal hearing. Bowles has the right to contest the findings, but as of yet, he hasn’t responded to the complaint, NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “He never filed an answer, so it looks to be uncontested,” wrote Kizer via email. Regardless, the Georgia-based fighter is likely to be suspended and fined for his failed drug test at the NSAC’s next meeting, which takes place Aug.

ABC to recommend new MMA language for downed fighters

The concept of what constitutes a downed fighter could change following this week’s meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions, which oversees MMA’s regulatory bodies. Commission representatives Nick Lembo (New Jersey), Bernie Profato (Ohio) and Keith Kizer (Nevada), who represent some of MMA’s busiest and most prominent regulatory bodies, will present their plan at Wednesday’s ABC meeting in San Antonio. Lembo will argue their case, in which the regulators want referees to instruct fighters that placing a finger tip on the canvas won’t necessarily make them a downed fighter. In recent years, many standing fighters have taken advantage of the current language used in the Unified Rules of MMA. That helps them avoid knees or kicks to the head, or possibly put their opponent in danger of a warning or point deduction.

UFC 162 officially draws 12,964 attendance for $4.826 million live gate

UFC 162 earlier this month officially drew an attendance of 12,964 for a live gate of $4,826,450. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer on Thursday released the figures to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Officials initially announced an estimated attendance of 12,399 for a live gate of $4.862 million. The live gate figure puts the event in third place for the UFC all-time at MGM Grand Garden Arena, trailing UFC 148 and UFC 66. UFC 162 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. In the headliner, Chris Weidman upset longtime middleweight champion Anderson Silva to become the new middleweight champion

UFC 162 Drug Test Results: All Fighters Test Clean

function not found The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the results of the UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman fighter drug tests on Friday revealing all fighters tested clean. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer informed MMAWeekly.com that all 22 fighters that fought on the July 6 fight card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas were tested, and all returned negative test results. Chris Weidman became the new UFC middleweight champion in the main event of the fight card by knocking out long-time titleholder Anderson Silva early in the second round.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued no new therapeutic-use exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy at UFC 162 but did give UFC middleweight Chris Leben permission to use the prescription opioid medication Suboxone. Leben (22-10 MMA, 12-9 UFC), who lost a split decision to Andrew Craig (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at this past Saturday’s event, is the first fighter to receive an exemption for the drug, which typically is used as a replacement therapy for people with narcotic dependency. NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer confirmed the news today with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Leben was unreachable for comment. The veteran fighter’s exemption offers proof of his efforts to get clean following a well-documented struggle with drugs. In November 2011, he tested positive for oxycodone and oxymorphone following a loss to Mark Munoz at UFC 138 and was suspended by the UFC for one year.

Every fighter at the recent World Series of Fighting 3 event was drug tested and every fighter returned negative results. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer informed MMAWeekly.com of the WSOF 3 drug test results on Monday. World Series of Fighting 3: Fitch vs. Burkman took place on June 14 at The Joint at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

The head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission says criticism of officials won’t influence future assignments, to the contrary of UFC President Dana White’s recent comments. This past weekend following UFC 161, White blasted referee Steve Mazzagatti’s officiating in the World Series of Fighting 3 main event between Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman , saying Fitch’s safety was endangered when Mazzagatti failed to notice the fighter going unconscious from a guillotine choke early in the fight. (watch the Burkman vs. Fitch fight video .) At the same time, White lamented that his continued targeting of Mazzagatti would ensure the referee would continue to get big fights. “The Nevada State Athletic Commission will keep this guy around until he seriously hurts somebody,” White said to a small group of reporters following a post-event news conference for UFC 161, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) attended. “That guy is dangerous.” Fitch found himself caught in the chokehold after a brief exchange of punches early in the fight, which took place at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and was overseen by the NSAC. As Fitch staggered to the canvas, Burkman secured the submission and fell to his back. Fitch reached to free himself, but then went unconscious.

Former WEC bantamweight champion Brian Bowles tested positive for elevated testosterone levels following his UFC 160 loss to George Roop .
