RIO DE JANEIRO – If Viscardi Andrade was looking to make a big first impression in his UFC debut, consider it done. The Brazilian opened up Saturday’s card with a 96-second TKO win against Bristol Marunde, putting together a 1-2 combination to get things started, then kept the pressure on the American until he got the stoppage. The welterweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and the pay-per-view main card. The two felt each other out early, jabbing and kicking. But then Andrade put together a perfectly placed left-right combination, with the massive right hand dropping Marunde to his knees. Andrade followed him quickly, and looked to lock up a guillotine choke on the ground. Marunde tried to recover in the ground scramble, and though he briefly got closer to his feet, Andrade dropped him again

ABC to recommend new MMA language for downed fighters

The concept of what constitutes a downed fighter could change following this week’s meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions, which oversees MMA’s regulatory bodies. Commission representatives Nick Lembo (New Jersey), Bernie Profato (Ohio) and Keith Kizer (Nevada), who represent some of MMA’s busiest and most prominent regulatory bodies, will present their plan at Wednesday’s ABC meeting in San Antonio. Lembo will argue their case, in which the regulators want referees to instruct fighters that placing a finger tip on the canvas won’t necessarily make them a downed fighter. In recent years, many standing fighters have taken advantage of the current language used in the Unified Rules of MMA. That helps them avoid knees or kicks to the head, or possibly put their opponent in danger of a warning or point deduction.

SEATTLE – Julie Kedzie didn’t want to go into Germaine de Randamie’s Muay Thai world, but de Randamie didn’t give her much choice. de Randamie worked tirelessly for knees in the clinch and went on to take a split decision from Kedzie with scores of 30-27, 28-29 and 29-28. The women’s bantamweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX. Kedzie shot for a takedown 30 seconds in, but de Randamie shrugged it off. Seconds later, Kedzie caught her with a left hand that put her on her knees. But de Randamie was able to recover and tied Kedzie up on the fence, where she hoped to work her Muay Thai prowess. She worked knees to the body while keeping Kedzie tied up.

Former Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino captured her second major title on Saturday night in the main event of Invicta FC 6 in Kansas City, Mo. Justino stopped Marloes “Rumina” Coenen for the second time to claim the inaugural Invicta FC 145-pound championship. Justino (12-1) was in complete control of Saturday’s rematch and pay-per-view headliner from start to finish. She battered Coenen (21-6) with punches, knees and brutal slams that kept the Dutch standout on the defensive throughout the one-sided fight. Coenen did threaten with a kneebar in Round 2, but Justino easily escaped and she scored with more big punches on the feet

Frankie Edgar: “I Will Defeat Charles Oliveira”

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will compete in a non-title fight for the first time since 2009 when he faces Charles Oliveira on the UFC 162 main card on Saturday. He believes fighting a three-rounder instead of five rounds could force a welcome change his approach. “It’s a blessing in disguise, I feel like, coming back to a three-round fight. It’s going to make me get out of the gun early and make sure, first round, I’m in his face and I’m in the rhythm that I like to be in fourth and fifth (round),” Edgar told UFC.com . Oliveira (16-3, 1 no contest) has logged submissions in all four of his UFC fights, earning Submission of the Night honors twice. “He’s tough. He’s dangerous. Probably the tallest guy I may have ever fought. He’s got pretty good Muay Thai. He mixes it up well with kicks, knees, elbows. He’s got a slick submission game. Women’s MMA Report: Alexis Davis wins UFC debut, Megumi Fujii set to retire

Highly touted Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Alexis “Ally-Gator” Davis made a successful UFC debut earlier this month, but her victory didn’t come as easily as some had predicted. Davis narrowly outpointed Rosi “The Surgeon” Sexton in a main-card bout at UFC 161, which took place June 15 in Winnipeg. Davis (14-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC) got off to a strong start in Round 1 and landed some nice knees in the clinch. Sexton (13-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) reversed a takedown and wound up in Davis’ guard. Davis trapped the British veteran in a tight triangle choke, but Sexton refused to submit and landed some hard right hands in the final minute. Sexton secured a takedown in the second round and landed ground and pound until Davis kicked off of the cage and took top position

Despite many people saying Weidman has the tools to challenge the champ, Silva says he is ready. “The fight is the fight. I’m ready for the fight for a long time,” Silva told UFC.com . “I will be prepared to fight.” In his seven-year title reign, Silva has beaten opponents by every way imaginable: front kicks, punches, knees, elbows, chokes. Twenty of his 33 wins have been by knockout. The champion attributes his success to his training. “I believe you train 100-percent, your results will be 100-percent,” he said. “Everything that I do in the fight are things that I’ve trained.” The undefeated Weidman (9-0) is an accomplished grappler, while Silva is the most accurate precision striker the sport has ever seen. It’s a classic contrasting styles match-up and Silva believes the fighter that is able to combine all aspects of fighting will emerge the winner. “Weidman got good jiu-jitsu and great wrestling.
