LONDON – It wasn’t pretty, but Britain’s Phil De Fries made good on his promise to defend his KSW heavyweight title on home soil at KSW 50, grinding out a split-decision victory after five grueling rounds at the SSE Arena, Wembley. De Fries and Brazilian challenger Luis Henrique spent the large majority of the opening three rounds seemingly locked together in an endless clinch as they battled for grappling supremacy in a largely uneventful first half of the contest. With both men clearly fatigued from three rounds of grapple-heavy action, the two heavyweights turned to their striking in the fourth, but neither man’s strikes carried the power needed to make the breakthrough. It meant the bout went to the fifth and final round as De Fries, looking marginally the fresher man, pushed the pace in the final five minutes as the contest went all the way to the final bell. And when the judges’ scores were tallied, it was De Fries who ran out the victor via split decision as the Brit secured his third successive title defense. LONDON – Polish MMA promotion KSW returns to the SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday for its landmark show, KSW 50. The event features a trio of title fights, with the promotion’s heavyweight, light heavyweight and interim lightweight titles on the line. The night’s main event features a heavyweight title clash. England’s own Phil De Fries looks to make the second successful defense of the strap when he takes on Brazilian Luis Henrique . In the co-feature, Polish KSW light heavyweight champ Tomasz Narkun faces London-based Pole Przemyslaw Mysiala . The interim lightweight belt is also up for grabs, as Northern Ireland’s former UFC veteran Norman Parke battles former TUF alum Marcin Wrzocek

KSW 50: Roberto Soldic gets new opponent for Wembley showcase

LONDON – Croatian wrecking machine Roberto Soldic will no longer put his KSW welterweight title on the line at KSW 50 on September 14, but he will remain on the fight card for the Polish promotion’s landmark show. Soldic (16-3 MMA, 4-1 KSW) was set to face Patrik Kincl at the SSE Arena, Wembley in a welterweight title defense this weekend. But when the Czech challenger was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury, KSW officials moved quickly to preserve Soldic’s place on the card.

There’s been a change at the top of the fight card for KSW 50 in London, with the promotion’s heavyweight champion now set to face a new opponent. England’s Phil De Fries originally was due to face Damian Grabowski at the SSE Arena, Wembley on Sept. 14, but injury to the Pole left the belt-holder without a challenger for the landmark event. However, a replacement opponent has been found, with Brazilian heavyweight and six-fight UFC veteran Luis Henrique stepping in to challenge De Fries (17-6 MMA, 3-0 KSW) in London. The news was confirmed to MMA Junkie by KSW officials and subsequently announced via the promotion’s official social media channels
