Former UFC middleweight Jason Miller and current UFC contender Mark Munoz were once the closest of friends and training partners. At one time, they even went as far as to call each other brothers. The two trained side by side at Reign, Munoz’s gym in Lake Forrest, Calif., as they battled their way up the MMA ladder as UFC employees. Over the last few weeks, Miller, who goes by the moniker “Mayhem,” has found himself behind bars on more than one occasion – three to be exact. The charges seem to stem from a relationship with a female friend that has rapidly turned sour and cost Mayhem a good portion of his time, money, and perhaps his sanity as well.

At one point or another in every fighter’s career, they are paired up against a lesser known opponent where they have much more to lose than to gain. In the case of UFC bantamweight contender Urijah Faber (28-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC), that’s the exact situation he finds himself in against unheralded Brazilian Yuri Alcantara (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 26, which goes down Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden. Currently ranked among the top 135-pound fighters in the world, Faber is on the cusp of a title shot after back-to-back submissions of Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen in February and April of this year. With an impressive resume under his belt, one would think “The California Kid” had intentions of facing the highest profile opponents possible in order to move up the ladder. Instead, Faber took a fight against someone looking to take what he’s got and doesn’t offer much in return. UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald spent much of the past few weeks insisting he would not and could not fight friend and teammate Georges St-Pierre . Not even for the UFC welterweight title St-Pierre has held for the last five years. Before MacDonald’s lackluster unanimous decision win against Jake Ellenberger (29-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) at UFC on FOX 8 in Seattle, UFC President Dana White said he didn’t believe it. After the plodding performance by MacDonald (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC), who used a jab and a front kick and little else to win the fight on all three judges’ scorecards, it seemed like persuading MacDonald to accept a UFC title shot was the least of White’s concerns. “I don’t think he moves down the ladder,” White said of MacDonald after the event. “But do you think anybody’s screaming to see him fight again?” White had a point. UFC 165 Fight Card Filling Up with Addition of John Makdessi vs. Renee Forte

The UFC 165 fight card continues to fill up with the addition of a lightweight bout between John Makdessi and Renee Forte. UFC officials announced the new bout on Tuesday. UFC 165 features Jon Jones putting his UFC light heavyweight championship on the line against Alexander Gustafsson. Makdessi (11-2) enters the fight on a two-bout winning streak. He bounced back from the first two losses of his career to defeat Sam Stout and Daron Cruickshank. The Canadian now finds himself climbing back up the ladder of the 155-pound division. A third consecutive victory would likely put him in bouts against the division’s elite

UFC’s Glover Teixeira anticipates September return, expects assignment soon

Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira (21-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) expects to resume his assault of the UFC’s light heavyweight division later this year, and the fast-rising contender said he could return to action as soon as September. “I want to know what’s next for me, too,” Teixeira told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I think I might be fighting in September. They asked me if I’d be ready. We’ll probably hear soon who I’m going to fight, and I’m sure it will be great.” The 33-year-old Teixeira is one of the UFC’s brightest prospects at 205 pounds, boasting an incredible 19-fight win streak that includes UFC victories over James Te Huna , Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Fabio Maldonado and Kyle Kingsbury . Teixeira currently sits at No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com light heavyweight rankings , but he lacks a signature win to bring him to the very top of division’s ladder. But Teixeira doesn’t blame the UFC for potentially slow-playing his rise to the top.
