(This story appears in today’s print edition of USA TODAY .) Ricardo Lamas was none too happy in June. A few weeks before a major fight against a major opponent, Lamas had it yanked out from under him. What was even worse for the UFC featherweight was his opponent was given a title shot instead of him. Lamas (13-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) was supposed to meet “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (13-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC), with the winner expected to be next in line to fight for the title after champion Jose Aldo ‘s fight against Anthony Pettis at UFC 163. Lamas thought he’d get the next shot after a decisive TKO win against Erik Koch in January, but it went to Pettis.

Korean Zombie Was Surprised to Get UFC 163 Title Shot, but Happy He Did

When it was announced that Anthony Pettis was injured and forced out of the UFC 163 featherweight title fight with champion Jose Aldo , some were surprised when “The Korean Zombie,” Chan-Sung Jung , was named as Pettis’ replacement. In fact, Jung was one of them. “At first, I was really in disbelief about it, and so until Dana White actually announced that I was going to be in the fight, I actually didn’t really even believe it, but it was true. But the excitement lasted quite a while,” said Jung on a recent media conference call promoting the event. Jung was originally scheduled to face Ricardo Lamas at UFC 162, but was pulled from the fight to face Aldo. Lamas is ranked higher than Jung and many felt Lamas should have been Pettis’ replacement. Jung doesn’t disagree, but believes more than just rankings were factored into the decision

LAS VEGAS – When Irish featherweight Conor McGregor (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), heard he was getting a new opponent at next month’s UFC Fight Night 26 event (formerly known as UFC on FOX Sports 1 1), he offered up an idea for UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby: top-ranked 145-pounder Ricardo Lamas (13-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC). “I wanted Rircardo Lamas,” McGregor admitted Wednesday at a press luncheon in Las Vegas. McGregor was originally slated to meet Andy Ogle at the event, which takes place on Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden. When Ogle was forced to withdraw from the card, McGregor was in need of a new opponent.

Cub Swanson Wants a Title Shot, but Isn’t Going to Wait for One

UFC featherweight contender Cub Swanson wants a title shot against champion Jose Aldo , but isn’t going to sit around and wait for it to happen. Riding a five-fight winning streak and finishing four of his last five opponents, Swanson has positioned himself on a short list of names at the top of the 145-pound division. Aldo is scheduled to face Chan Sung Jung , “The Korean Zombie,” on August 3 at UFC 163 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and if Swanson has to take another fight before getting a crack at the title, he has some names in mind. “Well, if they are going to give someone else Aldo then that’s way too long for me to wait. I’m in prime position right now. I’m doing well. There’s no sense in me waiting, but I do want that fight and if I have to fight one more time then I would like the Ricardo Lamas fight or the Frankie Edgar fight,” Swanson told MMAWeekly.com content partner Knockout Radio . “There’s also Chad Mendes , but he’s got to get through my teammate, Clay Guida , first,” he added. “So my first choice would be Aldo. I don’t think The Korean Zombie is going to beat him and so then after that it would either be Lamas or Edgar. They’d be my next choices.” Taking another fight in the talent-rich 145-pound division is risky, but it’s a risk Swanson is willing to take. “I’ve thought about that and I just think that if I did, for some reason, lose because the talent is so high, I wouldn’t get down on myself. I would just make the adjustments and try to get right back on a win streak because at this point of my career and in my life, I’m having so much fun fighting and I just like to get out there and do it,” he said

The featherweight division in the UFC has become one of the most exciting in all of MMA. Next month, 145-pound champion Jose Aldo puts his title on the line against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung , at UFC 163. It’s a fight that came about only after former WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis fell out of the title fight with a knee injury. Jung then was moved into the slot – after more than a year off recovering from injuries. That title opportunity came much to the chagrin of fighters like Ricardo Lamas , who was scheduled to meet the “Zombie” at this past weekend’s UFC 162, and Cub Swanson . But Jung has the title shot nonetheless, with Lamas and Swanson waiting in the wings. LAS VEGAS – Add Dennis Siver to the growing list of UFC featherweights who believe they’re just one win away from a title shot. As it turns out, Siver’s Saturday opponent, Cub Swanson , is right there with him. Siver (21-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) and Swanson (19-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) meet in a key contenders bout to open up the main card of UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Siver has won two straight at featherweight since dropping down from lightweight, where he spent 13 fights after a drop from welterweight and picked up five post-fight bonus awards in the UFC. Swanson has four straight featherweight wins and along with Ricardo Lamas believes he should be next in line for a shot at the 145-pound belt that Jose Aldo puts on the line against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung , in August. Lamas and Swanson believe they should be there ahead of Jung, as it is.

Ricardo Lamas probably has seen better days. It was only a month ago that Lamas was thinking about the virtues of “The Korean Zombie,” and, for lack of a better way to put it, the reasons why the UFC might like Chan Sung Jung just a little more than him. Of course, at that time, Lamas (13-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) was booked to fight Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at UFC 162 just two weeks from now. Then the bottom dropped out. A little more than a week ago, Jung was pulled from the fight – which likely would have determined the next challenger UFC’s featherweight title. He took his three-fight win streak and jumped right into a title fight against Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in August when Anthony Pettis had to pull out with a knee injury. It’s the kind of thing that just happens in MMA, but it may have seemed especially cruel to Lamas, who is 4-0 since dropping to 145 pounds, since it was Pettis who leapfrogged him in February by texting UFC President Dana White to ask for a chance to drop down from his No. 1 contender spot at lightweight to challenge Aldo at featherweight

Ricardo Lamas Pulled from UFC 162 Fight Card, Tim Boetsch vs. Mark Munoz Moves to PPV

First Ricardo Lamas lost his UFC 162 fight against Chan Sung Jung, and now he’s been removed from the fight card altogether. UFC Tonight reported Lamas’ removal from the fight card on Tuesday night. With the loss of the bout, the UFC has moved the middleweight showdown between Tim Boetsch and Mark Munoz up to the pay-per-view main card. The Lamas vs. Jung bout was pulled apart when Anthony Pettis injured his meniscus and had to withdraw from his UFC 163 challenge of featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Both Lamas and Jung were considered deserving contenders, but UFC officials offered the Aldo bout to Jung, who admittedly felt bad for his former opponent. Jung told UFC Tonight ’s Ariel Helwani that he felt Lamas probably should have gotten the shot first, but that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity presented him. Lamas will still get paid his show money for the fight, even though he is now without a bout and would like to face the winner of Aldo and Jung.

Ricardo Lamas will not remain on next month’s UFC 162 card, and instead a preliminary-card fight between Tim Boetsch and Mark Munoz will be promoted to the main card. That fight had been set as the featured prelim on FX. The announcement was part of Tuesday night’s edition of “UFC Tonight” on FUEL TV, with correspondnet Ariel Helwani getting word from UFC officials. UFC 162 takes place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The show is headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and top contender Chris Weidman . The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Ricardo Lamas still may fight at UFC 162, but will get show money if pulled

WINNIPEG – Dana White appears to be sympathetic to Ricardo Lamas ‘ plight of late. The UFC president on Saturday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Lamas (13-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will be paid his show money for next month’s UFC 162 event in Las Vegas – even though he’s not likely to remain on the card. Lamas was scheduled to fight “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC), on July 6. The winner likely was going to move into the top featherweight contender position to meet the winner of a scheduled Aug. 3 bout between champ Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis . But a Pettis knee injury forced him out of the title fight, and that left a pair of options. And the UFC went with Jung instead of Lamas to head to UFC 163 in Rio de Janeiro to challenge for the title. When asked why the UFC went with Jung, who has not fought since May 2012 due to injury, got the shot over Lamas, who has a four-fight win streak and has beaten two fighters who at one point were offered title shots with Aldo, White’s response was simple.
