UFC 167 could be the end of the line for one UFC big man. Former UFC champion Frank Mir and former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem square off in a feature bout at UFC 167 – the promotion’s 20th Anniversary event – but it could be the last time we see the loser in the Octagon. UFC president Dana White met with reporters at a media day scrum in Toronto on Thursday. When he was asked if it was a do-or-die situation for Mir and Overeem, he didn’t mince words.

Indianapolis gets ‘TUF 19′ tryouts Aug. 27 for middleweights, light heavyweights

Open fighter tryouts for Season 19 of “The Ultimate Fighter” are slated for Aug. 27 in Indianapolis, with 185- and 205-pound fighters invited. Middleweights also were featured on Season 17 of the show, which was coached by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger Chael Sonnen . But the last time light heavyweights were contestants on the show was Season 8, which was coached by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir , with Ryan Bader emerging as the winner. Indianapolis’ Westin Hotel will host the tryouts for the show, which is expected to begin filming in early 2014 for a broadcast later that spring on FOX Sports 1.

SEATTLE – UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson hardly missed a step between the birth of his first child and his fight camp for John Moraga at UFC on FOX 8. Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he missed but one day of training to be with wife Destiny as she gave birth to his son Tyren after 14 hours in labor. So for those who think his focus might be off for his second attempted title defense, they can think again. “I didn’t have to miss one OBGYN appointment, and people were like, ‘Oh, you’re distracted,’” Johnson said. “I’m like, ‘Last time I checked, this is life, and fighting is part of my life, and so is my wife.’” Of course, it was an entirely new experience in his life, which wasn’t exactly what he expected at times. “The labor was a little more intense than I thought it was,” said Johnson, who headlines the FOX-televised card against Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on Saturday at Seattle’s KeyArena, which is a short drive from his home in Kirkland.

The second one I won in the second round with a TKO and that’s even better because I like ending the fight early and not going to the judges. “ Being undefeated (with a record of 6-0) is familiar territory for Calderwood, as is opponent changes. Prior to settling on Norma Rueda Center (2-0) for this Saturday’s Invicta FC 6 event in Kansas City, Calderwood went through two other opponents. “I just like fighting and the opponent at the end of the day doesn’t really matter,” said Calderwood. “That happens in this sport and it wasn’t the first time it happened to me and it won’t be the last time, so it doesn’t really bother me.

UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz Making Progress, Gets Clearance to Start Boxing

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is on the mend and making progress. The last time he fought was against Demetrious Johnson in October 2011. Cruz was scheduled to fight a rubber match against Urijah Faber at UFC 148 in July of 2012. While the two were coaching season 15 of The Ultimate Fighter, Cruz tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during training. He underwent surgery that utilized the ligament from a cadaver to repair his ACL. His body, unfortunately, rejected the foreign ligament, so he had to undergo a second surgery in late 2012.
