Former UFC title challenger Lauren Murphy returns from two-year layoff vs. Eduarda Moura

Lauren Murphy is set for her next UFC assignment – two-and-a-half years after her previous one. At a UFC Fight Night event July 12, expected for Nashville, Tenn., Murphy (16-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC) returns to battle rising Brazilian fighter Eduarda Moura (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a flyweight bout. Two people with knowledge of the booking recently informed MMA Junkie of the matchup but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Murphy, 41, fought Valentina Shevchenko for title gold in September 2021. She lost by fourth-round TKO , a defeat that snapped a five-fight winning streak. Following the title bid, Murphy returned for a one-sided win over Miesha Tate .

After a one-sided decision loss to former champion Jessica Andrade, Lauren Murphy said she’s ready to take some time off. Murphy (16-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC), who will turn 40 in July, was largely dominated from bell to bell by Andrade (24-9 MMA, 15-7 UFC), who swept the scorecards with two 10-8 rounds from two judges and one 10-8 frame from the third. Their women’s flyweight fight was part of the UFC 283 main card at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Murphy had been on one of the best runs in the 125-pound division. Heading into the fight with former women’s strawweight champ Andrade, Murphy had won six of seven fights. Her lone loss in that stretch was a fourth-round TKO to dominant champ Valentina Shevchenko in a September 2021 title fight

RIO DE JANEIRO – Lauren Murphy thinks the idea of beating Valentina Shevchenko isn’t as inconceivable as it once was. Murphy (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC), who returns to action against Jessica Andrade (23-9 MMA, 14-7 UFC) in a key women’s flyweight bout on Saturday at UFC 283 , already had her crack at dominant divisional titleholder Shevchenko (23-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC), but to no avail. Shevchenko earned a fourth-round TKO over Murphy at UFC 266 in September 2021, but in her next fight nearly lost the belt. She edged out a split decision over Taila Santos at UFC 275 in June 2022 and went down to the wire in a bout many fans, fighters and media think she lost. It’s Murphy’s ultimate goal to get back to another title shot, and while Shevchenko looked untouchable going into their first encounter, Murphy has a different perspective now. “I thought Taila won that fight,” Murphy told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC 283 media day

The former women’s flyweight title challenger was determined to get her hand raised at UFC on ABC 3 and show she wasn’t going to be a stepping stone for Miesha Tate. Tate, a former UFC and Strikeforce champion at bantamweight, was dropping to 125 pounds for the first time in her career. Her highly anticipated flyweight debut came with plenty of talk about a potential title fight against champion Valentina Shevchenko well before making her actual debut in the weight class. Murphy (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) enjoyed the underdog role, but never took it as a reality.
