Most fighters can point to a moment in time when mixed martial arts caught their eye and they said, “I could do that.” UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is no different. She had already competed in the 2004 Olympics as a Judoka – where she failed to medal – and was in the middle of another run, preparing for the 2008 Olympics, where she would win a bronze medal. She became the first American to win an Olympic medal in women’s judo. It was her judo team that unintentionally exposed her move to a career in fighting.

They may have been the darlings of March Madness, but Florida Gulf Coast University’s basketball team didn’t exactly gain a fan in UFC women’s bantamweight contender Miesha Tate . During a recent red-carpet interview with ESNEWS, some “Dunk City” players, who upset their way to an Sweet Sixteen berth this year despite being a No. 15 seed, noticed Tate. When told she’s a UFC fighter, that led to an advance, which was quickly met with an epic shoot-down. “I would love to take a piece of that,” one player creepily stated. “You wouldn’t remember it,” the former Strikeforce champion quickly retorted. Ref Herb Dean was unsure if Anderson Silva was faking or unconscious at UFC 162

Veteran referee Herb Dean had refereed four Anderson Silva fights prior to UFC 162 and seen others cageside. So when Silva began to clown Chris Weidman in the main event of this past Saturday’s pay-per-view, he did little else but pay close attention. Dean couldn’t hear what, if anything, “The Spider” was saying when he gesticulated at Weidman in the middle of exchanges. “I didn’t have any problem with it,” Dean told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “If that’s what he wanted to do. Everybody is in there for their own reasons, and he’s in there to do something great, and he challenges himself to be able to do his antics while he’s right there in the danger zone, and he was doing his thing.” Unfortunately for Silva, that led to a different result than any of the other times he stepped into the octagon and toyed with his opponents. For the first time in his octagon career, his antics caught up to him when Weidman landed a left hook that sent him crashing to the mat.

LAS VEGAS – Dave Herman landed three strikes – four if you count touching gloves with Gabriel Gonzaga. But Gonzaga had four of his own, and they were all he needed. Herman wanted to establish distance early with kicks – but then ate a right hand that led to a Gonzaga TKO win just 17 seconds into the fight. The heavyweight bout was part of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FX ahead of a main card on pay-per-view. Herman kicked to the body early, trying to create that distance he might need against the heavy-handed Brazilian. A second push-kick to the body came right after the first. But it was his third kick that led to his quick dismantling.
