UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was able to do what no other 185-pound fighter could before him, hand former titleholder Anderson Silva his first UFC loss in seven years of competition when the two fought at UFC 162 on July 6. The 29-year-old New Yorker secured an early takedown in the title fight. He attempted two submissions and knocked out the greatest of all time with a left hook in the second frame. It was an amazing feat, but made more incredible by Weidman not being in top form for the fight. “I think I went out there and worked hard and went for everything that I felt. UFC on FOX 8 results/photos: Melvin Guillard knocks out Mac Danzig in second

SEATTLE – The way Melvin Guillard waited against the fence, coiled and ready to counter Mac Danzig’s attacks, you got the sense that someone would hit the mat sooner or later. Turned out it was Danzig who was destined to hit the deck, as a second-round left hook by Guillard dropped him and a few follow-up hammerfists knocked him the rest of the way out, resulting in a knockout victory for Guillard at 2:47 of Round 2. The lightweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX. It seemed clear early on that Guillard had a speed advantage in the match-up. Danzig made a couple early attempts to get the action to the mat, but when that proved unsuccessful the former “Ultimate Fighter” winner had to settle for striking with Guillard, which proved as dangerous as ever. The left by Guillard sent Danzing tumbling backward.

Watch Nassau County honor UFC champ with ‘Chris Weidman Day’ today at 2 p.m. ET

New York’s Nassau County in Long Island will honor recently crowned UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman with a ceremony today at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT). You can watch a live stream of the event, in which July 17 will be declared “Chris Weidman Day.” Today’s ceremony takes place at Long Island’s Coral House. County executive Edward Mangano and other officials will be on hand for the festivities. The ceremony follows Weidman’s July 6 upset of longtime titleholder Anderson Silva at UFC 162. In the pay-per-view headliner, Weidman capitalized on Silva’s taunting and clowning after connecting on a fight-altering left hook early in the second round. It halted Silva’s 17-fight win streak and string of 10 consecutive UFC title defenses.

function not found Although many of his peers were saying that Chris Weidman could defeat Anderson Silva at UFC 162 on Saturday night in Las Vegas, not many picked him to knock Silva out cold, which is exactly what he did. Weidman took the fight to Silva from the opening bell, taking “the Spider” down and working his ground and pound attack, but couldn’t keep him there. Silva danced and taunted Weidman for much of the latter half of the opening frame, and again to start round two. Weidman remained patient, timed his attacks, and eventually caught Silva with a left hook, flooring the UFC’s longest reigning middleweight champion and finishing him off with strikes at the 1:18 mark of the second round. UFC welterweight champion and part-time Weidman training partner Georges St-Pierre was one of the fighters who was confident that Weidman could pull off the upset, but even he was surprised by the way it ended. “I predict Chris Weidman was going to win, but I didn’t think he was going to win the way that he won,” St-Pierre told PokerListings.com . Veteran referee Herb Dean had refereed four Anderson Silva fights prior to UFC 162 and seen others cageside. So when Silva began to clown Chris Weidman in the main event of this past Saturday’s pay-per-view, he did little else but pay close attention. Dean couldn’t hear what, if anything, “The Spider” was saying when he gesticulated at Weidman in the middle of exchanges. “I didn’t have any problem with it,” Dean told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “If that’s what he wanted to do. Everybody is in there for their own reasons, and he’s in there to do something great, and he challenges himself to be able to do his antics while he’s right there in the danger zone, and he was doing his thing.” Unfortunately for Silva, that led to a different result than any of the other times he stepped into the octagon and toyed with his opponents. For the first time in his octagon career, his antics caught up to him when Weidman landed a left hook that sent him crashing to the mat.

Not the other way around. But then, there was nothing normal about the main event of UFC 162 in Las Vegas, so why should the immediate aftermath be different? All it took was one left hook from challenger Chris Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) to put an end to Anderson Silva ‘s (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) clowning around in the cage, and with it his record-breaking reign as UFC middleweight champion. The sweat wasn’t even dry on the canvas when the rematch talk started, but leave it to the mercurial Silva to go sprinting down the road less traveled at every opportunity. “I don’t fight anymore for the belt,” Silva said moments after suffering his first loss in more than seven years, and the only knockout loss of his 16-year career.
