UFC on ESPN 29 has lost a women’s flyweight fight. Liana Jojua is out of her scheduled Aug. 21 meeting with Cortney Casey due to visa issues. The fight was expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. While the bout won’t be happening on its original date, the matchup is expected to remain intact and be rescheduled for a later event.

UFC 254 medical suspensions: Three fighters handed provisional six-month layoffs

Jared Cannonier , Nathaniel Wood and Liana Jojua all face potential layoffs of up to six months following UFC 254. Cannonier (13-5 MMA, 6-5 UFC) was defeated by Robert Whittaker via unanimous decision in the middleweight co-main event bout at “UFC Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, while British bantamweight Wood (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) was edged on the scorecards by Casey Kenney in their 140-pound catchweight preliminary card matchup. Following their routine post-fight medical inspections, both men were handed 180-day medical suspensions pending medical clearance for injuries sustained during their respective bouts. Cannonier requires his left wrist to be cleared by a doctor before he is permitted to return, while Wood will need his right hand to be cleared after a negative x-ray following his bout. Georgian flyweight Jojua (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has also been handed a six-month suspension after her bout with Miranda Maverick was stopped at the end of the first round due to a large cut on Jojua’s nose. She is required to be cleared by an ENT before she is ready to return.

Few things can alter the trajectory of a fight in a split second like a slicing elbow that causes a nasty cut. And few such elbows have been delivered with the precision Miranda Maverick displayed in the opening round of her UFC 254 preliminary bout with Liana Jojua . The duo were trading in the pocket during their flyweight fight when Maverick (8-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) landed a picture-perfect upward left elbow to the bridge of Jojua’s nose. Jojua (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) gamely competed for the rest of the round as her face turned into a blood-soaked mess. At the end of the round, Jojua’s corner did its best to close the cut, but it was a gnarly slice, and they were unable to stem the bleeding

Miranda Maverick: Liana Jojua made ‘big mistake’ with UFC 254 faceoff threat

Miranda Maverick is not fond of Liana Jojua ’s behavior during their faceoff ahead of UFC 254. After Maverick (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), a 23-year-old promotional newcomer, and Jojua (8-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) made weight for their women’s flyweight matchup, the two sides came together for the first time at the pre-event faceoff. The situation got tense, with Jojua getting right in Maverick’s face and mouthing her something before offering a handshake, which Maverick denied. Maverick took to social media afterward and explained what happened on the stage. She said Jojua threatened her life in Saturday’s fight before offering a smile, and that didn’t sit well with Maverick (via Instagram ): Face-offs are done and I weighed in at 126. Opponent made a big mistake by telling me “I will kill you” like some remake of Rocky You would think they’d learn not to threaten me

Liana Jojua knows how to commit to an armbar, and her dedication led to a big win at UFC on ESPN 13. After dropping her UFC debut, Jojua (8-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) returned to the octagon for her sophomore appearance on Wednesday’s card at Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. She got her first win under the UFC banner , submitting Diana Belbita (11-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in the first round of their flyweight matchup. Jojua has earned all but one of her career finishes by submission, and Belbita made the error of taking things into her world early. It was a poor choice, as you can see in the highlight below (via Twitter ): Belbita, to her credit, put up quite a fight once Jojua had her arm isolated
