Dennis Siver: “I Think I Have A Lot More Power in This Weight Class” (UFC 162 Video)

Since dropping from the lightweight division to the 145-pound weight class, Dennis Siver has won back-to-back fights. Frankie Edgar Hopes a Win Over Charles Oliveira at UFC 162 Will Move Him Closer to Another Title Fight

Former UFC champion Frankie Edgar will do something he hasn’t done in years when he faces Charles Oliveira in a featherweight match-up at UFC 162 on July 6 in Las Vegas. He’ll compete in a non-title fight for the first time since 2009, and hopes a win over Oliveira will move him closer to another championship bout. “One step closer toward a title shot,” said Edgar when asked what a win over Oliveira would mean. Oliveira (16-3, 1 No Contest) is 2-1 as a featherweight and nine of his 16 wins have come by submission. “I think he’s a dangerous fighter, long and rangy with slick submissions,” Edgar said about his opponent in a chat on UFC.com . “I guess his slick submission game might be the biggest threat.” Edgar made his featherweight debut at UFC 156 on Feb. 2, losing to champion Jose Aldo by decision. His speed and footwork was an advantage for him in the lightweight division, and he doesn’t believe anyone at 145 pounds is going to have a speed advantage over him

Kevin Harvick, Inc., owned by NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and wife DeLana, has been a part of NASCAR for a decade and will reach outside of the auto racing industry for the first time to manage athletes. The company announced on Thursday that it has signed UFC lightweight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone as its first client. “It’s an honor and privilege to have this new relationship with Kevin (Harvick) and KHI,” stated Cerrone, currently ranked sixth in the UFC lightweight division. “I have learned a lot from Kevin and his management team over the last year and look forward to a long-lasting relationship both in and out of the Octagon.” Under Harvick and the KHI management team’s direction, KHI earned two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championships and 53 wins in the NASCAR Nationwide and Truck Series in its decade of competition. The signing of Cerrone isn’t Harvick’s first experience with the mixed martial arts industry. Mixed martial arts apparel company Tapout sponsored Harvick’s Nationwide Series car driven by Elliot Sadler in last year’s March race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was the apparel company’s first sponsorship outside of fighting. It also sponsored Harvick’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series truck at Michigan International Speedway, which was driven by Harvick. Harvick is a fan of mixed martial arts and recently worked out with top UFC welterweight contender Johny Hendricks . Charlie Brenneman’s road back to UFC includes Gemiyale Adkins at Cage Fury FC 25

UFC vet Charlie Brenneman (17-5) will resume efforts to rebuild his career when he takes his next fight in the lightweight division. Sources close to the fighter today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Brenneman is set to meet Gemiyale Adkins (8-5) at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 25, which takes place June 22 at Valley Forge Casino Resort in Prussia, Pa. Adkins this past month snapped a three-fight skid with a win on the East Coast regional circuit. He trains out of Team Balance in Philadelphia. Brenneman, whose primary gym is AMA Fight Club in Whippany, N.J., recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that his UFC release prompted some soul searching that led to his decision to drop weight. “People ragged on me all the time for not finishing fights,” he said. “What I’ve realized is part of the reason I wasn’t finishing fights was because these guys were so big that all of my effort went into controlling them. Whereas I’ve fought these guys at 155, and granted, they’re not UFC guys, it’s been a lot easier to finish them.” At 170 pounds, Brenneman went an even 4-4 in the octagon, while he’s finished both of his opponents at lightweight. The dietary requirements of making 155 pounds are not unfamiliar to Brenneman, who said his years as a collegiate wrestler helped prepare him for the demands of shedding weight. Still, he said, the process “always stinks.” Cage Fury Fighting Championships 25 can be purchased via online pay-per-view on the promotion’s website. Brenneman recently helped another former welterweight prepare for his biggest fight at lightweight.

BJ Penn is Considering a Return to Fighting in the UFC Lightweight Division

Former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn is contemplating a return to fighting in the lightweight division. UFC Tonight reports that “the door is still open” for Penn to “return to MMA in the near future.” In fact, the 34-year-old Hawaiian is currently in training to assess whether or not he is “mentally and physically prepared to get back into this sport.” Penn has bounced around weight classes throughout his career, but if he returns to fighting, it will be in the lightweight division. Penn (16-9-2) made his professional mixed martial arts debut in the UFC on May 4, 2001, at UFC 31. He fought in the inaugural UFC lightweight title fight at UFC 41 against Jens Pulver , losing by majority decision. In his welterweight debut, he defeated former champion Matt Hughes at UFC 46. He was later stripped of the title for accepting fights outside of the UFC. He returned to the UFC in an unsuccessful run in the 170-pound division before dropping back down to the lightweight division, capturing the title and defending it twice. While holding the lightweight belt, Penn moved back up to the welterweight division for a rematch with Georges St-Pierre . He was soundly defeated, unlike in their first meeting at UFC 58.

The injury bug has bitten Bellator’s lightweight division, and champion Michael Chandler ‘s next title defense will be delayed – and will come against a new opponent. Lightweight tournament winner Dave Jansen (19-2 MMA, 6-0 BFC) has suffered an injury, forcing him out of his title shot against Chandler (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BFC) later this month at Bellator 96. Instead, Chandler now will fight fellow tourney winner David Rickels (14-1 MMA, 8-1 BFC) next month at Bellator 97. Sources close to the fight on Sunday confirmed Jansen’s injury and the new title plan to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
