When John Liniker heard Ali Bagautinov refer to him as a “gift” opponent, he had to laugh a little. But since Lineker considers himself a giver, he said he’s prepping something special for when he gets to deliver that gift face-to-face. “I’m a gift opponent?” Lineker asked through an interpreter.

John Lineker vs. Phil Harris set for October’s UFC Fight Night 30 in Manchester

Fresh off his third straight UFC victory, John Lineker has his next flyweight test in front of him, and it’s one he already had been preparing for. Lineker (22-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will meet Phil Harris (22-10 MMA, 1-1 UFC) when the UFC returns to England in October. UFC officials announced the pairing early this morning. “UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie” is in the books and in one of the most highly criticized pay-per-view fight cards of 2013, the UFC produced a mixed bag of knockouts, submissions, controversial judging and disfigured limbs. A Brazilian fighter had his hand raised in four of the five main card bouts as John Lineker , Thales Leites , Cezar Ferreira and, of course, Jose Aldo , defeated their respective opponents in impressive fashion. The lone non-Brazilian to score a victory on the pay-per-view was Phil Davis , who upset former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in a decision that had many, including UFC President Dana White , up in arms. No matter the nature of each man’s victory, they all accomplished the ultimate goal of the sport, and that’s being declared the winner at the conclusion of the fight.

John Lineker missed at the weigh-ins on Friday, but was dead-on the mark at UFC 163 on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, finishing Jose Maria early in the second round. Lineker’s victory wasn’t without some turbulence, though. While Lineker looked more calm and in control early in the opening round, just before the midway point, Maria rocked him with a spinning backfist. Lineker tried to answer, but was still wobbled, and ended up eating a few more shots from Maria. He tried to kick, but Maria drove him to the mat. That proved to be a saving grace for Lineker, however, as he kept scrambling and biding his time, finally making a recovery. “I got a little lost when he did that,” said Lineker after the fight. “But I was able to recover and go into my game, which is obviously striking.” That’s exactly what Lineker did, as he came out firing in round two.

RIO DE JANEIRO – A great start for Jose Maria turned into a somewhat bizarre finish, as a strong first round gave way to second round collapse and TKO finish at the hands of John Lineker. The bout, a 129-pound catchweight fight after Lineker came in heavy for the bout, took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired as part of the pay-per-view main card following prelims on FX and Facebook. Early on, it seemed that Maria was in total control. A spinning backfist in the first frame caught Lineker flush, and Maria’s follow up attacks kept his opponent on wobbly legs for much of the round

UFC officials recently announced the change to the lineup.
